From Phoenix to Potsdam?! Help!

Hi gals,

I am currently a city girl/desert rat from Phoenix, who has really only lived in the southwest. My husband has been offered a great job at SUNY Postdam, and I am wondering how we are going to survive such a change! Everyone's 1st comment has been "You will freeze your tutu off"... Indifferent

Any of you live or have lived near Potsdam? Any suggestions? Words of encouragement? What should I be prepared for?!

Thanks :)

Re: From Phoenix to Potsdam?! Help!

  • My sister is a grad student at Crane, and she loves it. Aside from the weather, the town is really cute. Good luck!

  • Calvin went to the Crane School of Music at Potsdam... I didn't know him then, but my impression from stories is that it will be cold -- even relative to my experiences in central NY and the Albany area.  Right now is an awesome time of year to shop for cold weather coats, boots, etc., esp. if you aren't super picky about color -- it's end of season sale time.  You'll need a whole wardrobe of winter gear and you'll save a lot buying it now rather than in the fall!
  • seriously, it's not that cold here/there- NY in general.

Phoenix to Fargo ND is another story.

  • How funny - my MIL is moving from Upstate NY to Sedona, AZ!

At any rate, yes, the cold sucks in the winter, but once you get used to it, its not so bad - plus you can take up new hobbies - skiing and such!

  • And you will be near the Adirondacks during the summer which are just beautiful.

  • Thanks gals. I'm actually really looking forward to it! I will definitely be on the look out for winter clothes, but I might have to go out of Phoenix to find anything! (We are already in the 80's so most stores have gotten rid of any winter stuff). If I can learn to be okay with 117 degree weather, I can get used to 17 degrees :)
