Furnace fan?

Would setting the programmable thermostat fan on "on" make for cleaner air? I didn't realize you could run the fan all the time....but would it make sense that it would keep the air circulating and filtering?

We have pets and lots of pet fur....just wondering if that would help or just run the RG&E bill sky high!

Re: Furnace fan?

  • Hi S!

Per my DH (has been in the HVAC industry for 15 years).....

"Moving the air in your home constantly will filter the air more...however-

It does cause more dust, pet fur and dander to be circulated. Every home is different. Depending on what filter you have in your furnace- it can help. Try it for a month and see if there is a difference-- as for the power-- if your furnace is older it will probably raise your electric bill $10-20 dollars a month.. again try it and monitor everything.. at the end of the month if there is no difference then set it back to auto."

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Thanks! Great info! We have a very old furnace....every time we have it serviced the guy can't imagine how it is still running!

  • I don't know if your in the market for a new furnace or not, but NYSERDA is offering rebates for new Energy efficient systems/units.  I think NYSEG is to, but you use RG&E....check with them (RG&E) if they are offering any rebates too.

Hopefully the links below are the right ones.  Dh is teaching right now, so I will double check with him in a few hours when he takes a break.

ETA: Ok just talked to DH...forget about RG&E/NYSEG rebates b/c they end this month and he doesn't think you have time, b/c you have to go through the whole energy audit process.  But...NYSERDA still has the rebates and the government is coming out with some soon too.

  • Butting in - thanks, tj!! I've always wondered why I would want to keep the fan either on or off!
