Long story short, DH's w2 was messed up so not all of his taxes were taken out of his check this past year so we should owe the IRS some money. However, when we file online (I've gone through a couple of places), it is showing that we owe $1700. DH and I are trying to do the math with the deductions we should have as well as the fact that on my own I would get a refund and we can not figure out why we owe so much money.
We thought we knew someone that could help us out and at least explain this to us but they want to charge us $250 just for a consultation. Since it looks like we owe $1700 I'm not willing to be charged that amount of money just to find out they can't help me.
Does anyone know someone that we could go to that could either 1. help us reduce that amount or 2. at least explain to us why it is so high without charging us an arm and a leg. I will gladly pay it if I at least know what it is for. TIA!

Are you itemizing deductions or taking the standard deduction? Generally it's better to take the standard deduction.
In some cases, though, it can be better to itemize (this is what we do). If you are itemizing, it could be to your benefit to file married but separately. If you are using the online services, you could change your status and his, and see if the final amount owed is any different.
good luck!
