BC Help!

Hi Ladies,

I'm a new poster on here and I just had a question since I have my appointment tomorrow. So, I stopped my BC (Nuva Ring) at the beginning of this month. After reading up on these boards and, doing my own Google research I figured out that I have having a lot of the emotional side effects that others were having. Loss of Sex drive, Mood swings, Crying for no reason, Things like that. I thought that I would be okay with just using condoms with my hubby and, I and after a few times not being on BC and just using condoms I realized that this wasn't for me. I was too paranoid that the condom would break or other irrational ideas! haha So, my question is.. What is the recommendation for another Birth control? Is there any one who had a similar issue that found a bc that ended up working for them? Thanks for your help in advance! =)

Re: BC Help!

  • I have the Paragard IUD.  Perfect for those people that don't want kids in the near future.  There is also Mirena but I chose Paragard because I didn't want the hormones.
  • I've been on bc for several years and have gone through quite a few brands through trial and error. my understanding is that the nuva ring has the same hormone levels as ortho novum, a pill that is considered to have a medium level of estrogen (25 mcg i think). you may be having emotional side effects/decreased sex drive because that is too much estrogen for you. ask your doctor about low dose pills - i had a similar reaction and have been on aviane (20 mcg of estrogen) for over a year and havent really had any side effects. good luck!
  • i tried 3 or 4 different pills, the nuva ring, and now the mirena iud. i could not handle the hormones...no matter how low. i like the mirena, but i do question whether or not some of my health issues are caused by the iud. mainly, i'm super anxious and nauseated almost all of the time. the doctors have found no reason for the nausea nor have they stated that it could be the mirena.  i have had my iud for almost 5 years so it isn't unbearable. on a plus, i haven't had a period in 4 1/2 years. i don't look forward to november when i have to have it removed.

  • Thanks Ladies! I was really hesitant to go the IUD way just because i'm 23 and never had kids and would like children maybe in the next 2 -3 years. After reading your responses and, googling I've decided that the Paraguard IUD might be my way to go. I guess the bad part is I've read a lot of the bad side effects of what people have gone through.. Any suggestions on what to expect the day of insertion if I go that way??
  • I am also getting the Paragard and from what I've read, just take lots of ibuprofen before you go to get it inserted. See my post below called "If you have Paragard..."
  • Thanks for your help ladies!

eyelovemascara, Thanks for your posting!! I did look up ur posting and, will be sure to take some advil before I go. I'm nervous but i'm sure that it will be worth it in the end... I hope! lol =)

  • I switched my pill and have very few side effects...
  • Well, Today is the day.. When I first made the appointment they told me I could get the IUD in that day, but then when I got there they said that they require 2 day appointments for this stuff. So, Yesterday I went in for my consult yesterday and discussed my options and, the difference between the paraguard and the mirena.. After discussing it we decided that the Mirena is the way to go. So, at 10:30 this morning I go in for my appointment. They said that they will give me 800 mg of ibuprofen and I should be fine. Oh, I'm soooo nervous! I have no idea what to expect during or afterwards.. lol Well, Wish me luck ladies! =)
