annoyed

DH & I are friends with this couple. We've only hung out a few times, they're recent friends, but super nice. They bought a nice digital SLR camera and suddenly think they're artists/photographers. It annoys us to no end because the pictures they take are AWFUL!!! One of their relatives got married and they took wedding photos (after having the camera for like a week). OMG. They are blurry and dumb poses and just all around terrible. The best shot is one they took of themselves! I sure hope that relative didn't pay them and had a second shooter! Now they have a msg on their facebooks about booking them...riiiiight. I just hate when people do this, it happens a lot in the rural area where I grew up - people suddenly decide they have talent and others pay them for kitschy, poor quality crap. And it especially annoys me since DH & I are trained artists with natural talent who are qualified to get into photography! I'm actually planning to do a shoot with a friend and her husband & baby soon (for free) just to start building experience, maybe we'll do weddings someday. I hate to see my relatives & friends getting portraits at walmart!! I just hope my first 'real' shoot turns out better than the fakey fakersons. End rant.

Re: annoyed

  • Ugh. I totally get what you mean. I went to school for theatre and in NYC, I meet a million people who think education is a waste of time and they can become professional with their god-given talent . . . except they don't have any.

Look, some people are born awesome at stuff . . . some just think they are.

  • I know what you mean. I got one of those photographers, she was all I could afford. My mother could have took better pictures. In fact my favorite pictures that were taken were taken by DH's Uncle(we didn't pay him) who we wanted to take our pictures but he didn't want to because he thought he wouldn't do a good job.

I know if I ever have a daughter to get married my gift to her will either be a wedding planner or the photographer(a good one).

  • Agreed! I went semi-cheap w my photos... and then added on some time a week or so beforehand... Wish I would have gone with someone more into it, but she was really nice and we did get some good pics.

But I know what you mean... I have a relative that has the desire to take good pics... and she does awesome with pics of flowers and things, BUT is not a good people picture person-there's always someone w their eyes closed.  very frustrating! Glad I only take pics of plumbing stuff-cause I KNOW I'm no good at it!

    BTW-any word on that job?

  • I would be annoyed too especially since you and your hubs DO have the talent.  What can you do though if they are your friends except smile and nod and just hope they never ask if they can take pictures of you.

  • I feel you on this. I have a friend like this too. It sucks for real professionals in the field, especially when you're a small business just starting out. It makes people assume you're just some sh!tty photographer with no skill just like the other random people... unless you have the money to go huge and have a large portfolio.

I think it's great you're taking pictures of the family and building your portfolio.

  • I agree with Hudys - the crappy ones give a bad name to other new people. Boo on them!
  • I almost posted something very similar to this last night.  Seems like everyone under the sun that has the ability to by a decent camera wants to slap a logo on their pictures and call themselves a PRO.  Bullsh*t. Drives me nuts.  Especially when the pictures aren't good.

Sorry that you are wrapped up in this fiasco.  Hopefully they take some time to look at the competition and see that they have a lot to learn.

  • uuuuuuuuuuuuugh so lame. I totally get where you are coming from, but also people have to start somewhere...I dont think they should be charging or advertising themselves as photographers just yet...but you got to build a portfolio somehow.

I have done a TON of TFP and have shot with some rather amature photgraphers, and then 3 years down the road I see their work and its mind blowing! Its so awesome to see a photographer grow into their own.

  • Also customers are not going to be pleased if you deliver crappy photos and they're going to have to deal with that. Trust me - dealing with customers blows.
  • I totally understand that everyone has to start somewhere and I don't think they have any plans to go big with this, it's more of a spur of the moment hobby. Hopefully they find some understanding friends & family to practice on for free before some unsuspecting soul books them! Lots & lots of practice...
