Anyone or their DH ride new CapMetro Rail?

I love the idea of public transportation, but just curious as to who might use the new rail line from Cedar Park to downtown.  I live in an area where it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to use.  Have you or your DH taken it or plan to?  How was it?

Re: Anyone or their DH ride new CapMetro Rail?

  • my husband has talked about it, but hasnt made plans to do so yet. he started a new job this week and wanted to be sure he was on time and not trying out something new.

  • i live in cedar park and would love to use the rail, but i don't need to for work.  when i need it is on the weekends or later at night.  i would go downtown a lot more if there was weekend service or late at night service.  maybe in the future!

eta: dh is thinking about going back to school, and depending on his class schedule, it would be nice for him to park n' ride up in leander.  there's a connecting bus from the MLK station to UT, so it'd be convienent.  plus, i read on the capmetro website that UT students ride free with an ID.

  • I want to, but since to get there and back I'd have to spend the day downtown it's not practical for us.

I'm hoping they'll extend hours and be open on the weekends too.

  • I rode it on opening day.  But not as a means to get somewhere, just for the novelty and as exciting entertainment for a three year old.  It was very smooth and a relatively fast trip.  For now, the schedule is such that I'll just ride it every week or so for entertainment, but it doesn't work for my family's weird commuting hours.
  • I haven't been on it yet, but if it's anything like the rail systems in Denver and Minneapolis it will grow and grow as long as people keep using it.  I guess I'm not up on all of the local controversy with the light rail here in Austin, but there seems to be quite a bit of negativity about it from local media/radio/TV.  Every city that I've lived in except Austin has had a commuter rail system and it's great!

I don't know all the specifics, but I think the local controversy is the (considerable) additional time + money the project took to be completed than originally projected.

According to the news reports I've seen, the rail seems pretty popular for these first few days--up to 250 people per car on some trips!

  • Right before I left on Monday I actually took it, and will take it again when visiting, if only to support it. We need more things like this in Austin, and our public transit need to be improved on greatly. This is just another step in the right direction, as much as I hate CapMetro.
  • It is over 2 years late, has a limited schedule and is not going further from Leander than to Downtown anytime soon.  I would like to try and ride it but the additional cost makes it a break even for me plus would add about 20 or so minutes on to my commute.

  • We live near the Leander station and I would use it to go downtown for sessions but I work on the weekend.  I really wish they would open up a weekend schedule, we'd use it a ton for work and entertainment then!
