SoCal teacher arrested in alleged drunken teaching

The Associated Press ? March 24, 2010

THERMAL, CALIF. ? A Southern California school teacher has been arrested for allegedly teaching while drunk.

Toro Canyon Middle School teacher Tonya Neff was taken to the Indio jail Tuesday afternoon and booked for investigation of felony child endangerment.

Administrators at Thermal's Toro Canyon Middle School told the Riverside County Sheriff's Department that the 47-year-old teacher was apparently intoxicated on campus.

Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Tapp says Neff had taken prescription drugs and alcohol and an alcoholic beverage was found inside a container.

Coachella Valley school district Superintendent Ricardo Medina says there was never a threat to Neff's seventh-grade students. Neff has been placed on leave.

Re: drunk teacher?

  • Meh.  If I lived in Thermal I'd probably be drunk all day, too.

Funny related story.  When I was a cheerleader our coach used to always show up to games drunk with a flask in her jacket.  She was crazy and ended up getting fired over it in a rather humorous encounter with our athletic director at a game once.  I felt bad for her kids, though.

ETA: I should add that it was humorous because she was drunkenly slurring "I'm not drunkssssss!".  Then when the athletic director grabbed her arm to keep her from walking back into the arena the flask fell out and she told him it was cough syrup and insisted it was her American right to put cough syrup in a flask.

  • ummm....definitely interesting. I wonder WTF she was thinking.
  • im pretty sure my high school art teacher was drunk most the times i came to class.. and i had her third period so it was only about 10am? lol She always wreaked of cigarettes and booze! YAY CATHOLIC SCHOOL
  • Hmmmm, I love that it's a SoCal teacher that is drunk...but it's in a city in the boonies!!!!!! I have no idea where this place is, other than Coachella, where they have the rockster concerts.

  • I've never drank at school but I have drank (with coworkers) at school events.  We had a dance last year (we are a small charter school we don't usually do dances) and all of the teachers took turns going in small groups to the applebees down the street to get a couple drinks. And we had an open house last month and we only had about an hour between the end of school and the time the open house started so we went to a bar we could walk to and got a couple drinks.  Never been drunk though.  I have had parents come into meeting drunk off their butts, those meetings are always fun.
