Re: The Debate - Ifill

I have to say, I think she was excellent!  She wasn't biased in the least.  I thought she did a great job, and didn't deserve all the crap people gave her beforehand.

Re: Re: The Debate - Ifill

  • I don't think there'll be another peep about alleged bias from Ifill now (a) because she seemed very evenhanded as moderator, and (b) because Palin didn't tank and no one needs to make excuses for a bad performance.

I did have to yell at my radio this morning hearing one caller gripe about Palin having to "debate the moderator" whom he claimed was openly hostile toward Palin.  Not sure which debate he was watching!  (I shouldn't listen to call in shows, clearly.)

    ?

    Ditto.?

She should have kept both of them on point more but I understand why she couldn't/didn't.
Yeah, I actually wasnt impressed. I mean she did a good job of being completely unbiased, but I dont think she kept them on point enough or forced them to really answer the questions. I get why she didnt, but I still wasnt impressed.

I also thought all the questions were pretty much standard. Nothing really out of the box.

  • No bias for sure, but I felt it was one of her weaker debate experiences. She seemed like a non entity in the debate. Actually they could have just had people read questions off cue cards from the audience.

I may be biased because she asked my question from our E08 list yesterday (re: differences b/w them and their respective presidential candidates on policies)!  So exciting, although Biden didn't really answer it at all, and Palin predictably mentioned drilling in ANWR.

  • I thought she was fair and I must ditto carolina.

On a side note, she looks spookily like my mother. Very wierd.

  • I was not impressed with Ifill at all. What's the point of having a moderator if one of the candidates blatantly ignores the questions?

  • Who watched in 2004?  She asked this fantastic, totally out of the box question about HIV among African American women.  It was such an out of left field question, and it was fascinating watching both candidates struggle to answer it.

I really wish she had done one question like that again.  Just some random question that they never in a million years would have prepared for.  Just to see how they would have handled it.

I agree. I think because of all the controversy, Ifill felt like she had to use kid gloves in the debate. She let both Biden and Palin dodge some questions and didn't press for answers.

I think another moderator--one who wasn't perceived as biased going in--would have pressed a little more. I know I, as a viewer and voter, felt a little cheated.

  • I liked her much more than Lehrer, but I agree she went too easy on them both. I don't think she was biased in any way whatsoever. But I think she went easy on them in order to prove she wasn't biased. If this controversy wasn't hanging over her I think she would have probed more.
  • I've never been a huge fan of Ifill.  She was way too soft, though I think she was hindered even more than usual by the format.  Not being allowed to press the candidates for specific answers to her questions?  Ridiculous.
  • She was fair, but I do believe she deserved the licking she took for not disclosing her book to the selection committe.  That was just plain unethical.
  • I really like Ifill and was hoping for more last night.  Like ESF mentioned above, she asked some interesting, out of the box questions in 2004 and I was letdown she didn't do that in this debate.  I felt like the questions were really predictable.

She was fair and impartial as I expected her to be.  I'm glad that there was no room given for criticism that she was biased toward Biden.  I just wish there had been more "spark" in the questioning.
