Stupid baby pangs

J's cousin (the one who posted about her cervix on facebook) early this morning. I'm happy for her, but I feel a little bummed . . . partially because I'm concerned that I won't be able to handle having children. It's a kind of silly, irrational fear because I am getting better and there are things that can be done for pain management during pregnancy, but there's still that stupid fear in the back of my mind.

So dumb! I live in a closet and I need a new job - I don't even want a baby now! I'm at least two years away from considering one!

Re: Stupid baby pangs

  • If it makes you feel any better (or not alone)... I feel that way about being a SM... or is it the birthing process you mean? I wouldn't worry about that pain (not that I've had it...).

I still get the pangs--even though I know it's a crazy reaction!  Heck! I get frustrated when I see a SKID eating my super $$ health conscious cereal vs. the stuff they 'had to have'...

I think it's normal to have these pangs-even if you aren't ready or thinking of having a baby at this stage...

  • I was like this - I worried for years before I got pregnant about how to manage my anxiety while pregnant.  When the time comes you'll figure it out - pain management can be done while pregnant - even if its not the most effective, it'll work itself out.

And if you need a cure for the baby pangs, I can mail you the diaper I changed this morning.  Wink  Barf!

I'm mostly concerned about the extra weight and my back. I'm really skinny now and I have a lot of problems . . . I'm concerned about what adding 20-30 lbs would do to my back.  The fact that some woman fracture their tailbone during birth is concerning too, but I'm more worried about managing the pain during pregnancy.

     HA! You're so kind.

  • I can only imagine the fear you have. I think all women have some sort of fear with pregnancy even if we are no where near ready, we still think about it. Having a baby requires a lot from us so it's hard not to think about it even if it's 2+ years till the time comes.

Since you're making progress now, hopefully in 2 years the pain will be gone and not even an issue. If not, I'm sure you can work through it. And we'll all be here to support you.

Yes, I understand... someone I know has rheumatoid arthritis and she was worried she wouldn't be able to grab her baby-if there was an emergency... but... supposedly, her pain-RH would lessen during the pregnancy period... I understand your concerns, though... although I think my neck pain isn't nearly as bad as your back stuff...

  • My aunt has RA and had to go off her meds when pregnant, but she also felt really good while pregnant.  And she stopped working when she had their 1st one and home schooled them until this school year I think (and the oldest is 11 now).

There are pain management options during pregnancy, and you'll want to coordinate with your OB and your MD who manages your back/pain on the best strategies.  They may recommend that you have a scheduled c-section instead of trying to deliver vaginally b/c of the risk to your already fragile back.

I had baby pangs LONG before I got pregnant.

  • Thanks, ladies. It's a little bit irrational, but now that I remember what life is like without pain, I scared about going back. My doctor did tell me that your body releases more anti-inflammatories when you're pregnant so sometimes people feel their best when they're knocked up . . . I just don't trust my stupid back to behave. Hopefully in two years I'll be strong and healthy and ready to seriously consider it.
