? on Diva Cup (or similar product) and IUD

Ladies, everything I've read thus far says it is not recommended to use the Diva Cup if you have an IUD. Just wondering if anyone has and if so did you have any problems with your IUD.

I've had my IUD for over a year and have never been able to feel the string (Dr. said he cut them really short) so I was just wondering if it might be ok to try the Diva Cup. Figured I'd try you gals for some advice before I call the Dr. and have to sit on hold for at least 45min till I can talk to someone.

  • I don't have either of these things, but I know people who use both and don't seem to have problems.

Really, the Diva cup sits pretty low - I heard that you';re supposed to be able to have sex with the Instead cups, for example, because they're pretty high up, and I doubt even that would affect the IUD.  The Diva cup certainly doesn't - it's probably not even as high as a tampon.

I asked my gyno about it when I got the IUD and she said it was no problem.  I've had both for... what, 5 years now?  Holy crap.  Yep, 5 years.  My IUD string must be pretty short too - I can't feel it; DH has to to make sure everything's OK every now and then, but I do have really short fingers too.  I can reach the rim of my Diva cup when it's in.

  • Thank you. I thought it wouldn't be a problem either but just wanted to check and see if anyone else has used either of those products with the IUD.

I think I'm gonna try the instead soft cups simply because you can have sex with those. The whole reason this came about is because I'm supposed to have my period for our anniversary trip to Key West in June.  I mean the whole blasted time we are in Key West ughh.

Maybe you should start another post about those - I don't think everyone can have sex with the Instead cup.  It probably is your best bet though.  I'm terrible at planning vacations around my periods!

  • Ah they don't have thses in Canada! And the company doesn't ship up here. I'm gonna call and see. They seems really cool - I would LOVE to have sex during my period if these really work.

Oh, vacation was planed around period. Unfortunately my body hates me and my period goes anywhere from a 28 day cycle to a 38 day cycle. Seriously, wth? make up your damned mind.  I love my IUD but really do miss the pill as far as "moving" my period.

  • I have a Mirena IUD & quit using Instead after it was inserted. The directions specifically say not to use it if you have an IUD:

"Women using an intrauterine device or IUD should not use the Softcup? as there is a risk of dislodging or removing the IUD by pulling on the IUD string while removing the Softcup?."

This may be a non-issue for you though, if your strings are super short.

I have an IUD and I use a Diva Cup.  My dr. said it's fine, and I've never had a problem.  I refuse to give up either one, lol.

I've used Instead as well; it's nowhere near as good as the diva cup, IMO.  It's true that you can have sex while wearing it, but that's really its only redeeming quality.  It's harder to insert properly, is much more prone to leaks, and isn't nearly as comfortable.  The rim is huge compared to DC, and is very firm--flexible, yes, but firm--and it pushes against my bladder and makes me feel like I have to pee all the time.  And it's not reusable.

The sex issues is exactly why I want to try it. Seriously, could my body be any more damn annoying? I try to plan the trip around my period and then, what does my period do, go and change itself. Ughh. I will continue to use tampons (I like them, they never leak for me and I can't feel them) but if my period so chooses to rear it's ugly head on our trips then I will switch over to the soft cup.
