Anyone participate in a CSA?

DH and I are considering buying a share in a local (well, 50 miles away) farm. It's about $600 for 17 weeks with weekly delivery (about $35/wk). They guarantee at least a variety of 7 things. Part of me thinks that this will force us to eat a bigger variety of veggies/fruits and expand my cooking. Another part of me is nervous about spending so much money up front and then being disappointed. DH is on a HUGE organic kick since reading Omnivore's Dilemma and watching Food Inc.  and I'm trying to be supportive, I just don't want to get in over our heads. I'd love to hear about your experiences with CSAs!

Re: Anyone participate in a CSA?

  • Hey girl! We research CSAs in our area and decided that although I'm sure it WOULD force me to try new veggies and eat more of them, I just couldn't commit to a set weekly pickup time. We decided to start shopping at our local farmers markets (something we hadn't done in the past) and to put in two raised garden beds and try to grow a few things ourselves. I spent less building the garden beds than I would have for one season of a CSA and my garden investment will last for years.

  • I've been a member of CSAs for four years now and LOVE it. However, it's not for everyone. I have a guide on my blog that you can download free when you subscribe to my newsletter (feel free to unsubscribe again) that talks about whether a CSA is right for you and how to choose one.

Just a caution, driving 50 miles is going to get really old every week. I had to drive an hour each way for my winter CSA and HATED it.

  • 50 miles isnt that far.  I had to go 60 miles round trip, just to go to school as a child.  That town also had the only grocery store and medical facility.  It is 130 to the closest 'city' and at least 10 hours to a real city.  My point is driving is all a matter of perspective.
  • Ours is $450 for 18 weeks for a full-share (enough to feed 3-4 people). Each week they give a box with 6-8 different fruits, veggies, or herbs.

They are not all guaranteed to be organic, but they are all local (within 100 miles) and seasonally appropriate.

I don't know if I would drive 50 miles to pick up my share, a local farmer's market might be a better option if it is that far. Luckily I can pick mine up a block from my work!

  • I've always wanted to try one. Problem is, my husband hates veggies.  Dammit!
  • We've done it in the past (when we lived in CA) and we will be doing it again this year in Ohio.  We're really excited about it!  When we belonged to one before, the main problem was that we weren't terribly interested in the new stuff in the box each week.  We ate the apples, strawberries, fava beans, etc., but the stuff with which we weren't familiar, we just gave away.

This year, we're a bit more adventurous, and we're excited to try some new stuff.  Our farm is 29 miles from us, and I don't think 50 is too bad.  We will pick it up every other week at the farmers'  market 1.5 miles from our house.

Unless they're unreasonably expensive, I think CSA's are an awesome idea!  We had to do our research to find one that didn't require service on the farm.  We like eating the veggies, but we're just not "working on the farm" kinda people.

  • we love our CSA! and we have a yogurt, egg, and herb share. there is also a CSA is our city that offers a meat share.
  • when picking a farm share, it was really important to me to be able to pick the 10 items (from the list of what was available) i would be receiving each week.
