Need help - Little Bo Peep

Alright...I'm counting on you all to help me. :)

My 6 year old daughter has to dress up as little bo peep next Thursday and recite the nursery rhyme.  I can order the costume online but I'd pay $28 + $20s&h.

Any ideas on a cute, creative way to piece together the costume without having to buy it and pay the outrageous shipping?  Or is there a local store/shop that sells these sorts of things?

I've recently ordered a sewing machine and it should arrive any day.  While I'm not skilled enough to make the costume from scratch, I could sew a stitch or two if needed.

  • The only thing coming to mind for me is to check local costume rental places or Cappells. I couldn't make a costume to save my life so I wouldn't even know where to begin to help you with ideas for a DIY.

  • Okay, the only idea I have to is go buy her a cheap Easter dress at Target or Walmart that is blue and frilly (I bet they are out there) and give her a curved staff and you can make her a quick bonnet out of doily's or a white tablecloth.

    Good luck!

  • Maybe a Dorothy (ala wizzard of Oz) costume with blonde hair?

OOOOOO!  I have an adult "sexy dorothy" costume.  But it wouldn't be so short on my 6 year old.  Mabe I can have her try that on!  Good idea!

If that doesn't work, I'll look at Easter dresses!

  • Here's my quick DIY idea. You could try to go out and find a blue or pink jumper and then sew a bit of lace to the bottom hem and then just find a white shirt that has fluffy sleeves or sleeves that are kind of stretchy. Does she have a play tu-tu that you could use under the jumper to make the skirt more full? You could put a ball of paper in the sleeves to make it puffy and add a peice of ribbon around the bottom of the sleeve that ties in a bow or something. I wonder if you could find an easter hat that would look right or one that just needs to be dressed up with some ribbon. As for the staff, you may be able to find a cheap gardening yard staff that would work. I know I've seen some of the iron ones at Joanns I don't know if Walmart has any that aren't iron and are a bit smaller.

Or you could try that costume place downtown. haha That might be easier than trying to peice together an outfit.

  • I think others have taken care of some good ideas for DIY - and Cappell's has been recommended. But I will add - since you don't have your sewing machine yet - for trim - fabric glue is your friend.
