Complete Career Change

So a co-worker this morning put in her notice. She is leaving and going to open a Great Harvest up in North Charlotte. She said that she was about to hit 50 and thought it was about time she tried one last thing with her life. She made a comment that people around here are unhappy (which she's right about) and it's nice to have choices.

If you could change your career - would you? And what would you do?

Re: Complete Career Change

  • still trying to figure it out! i have ideas of things that interest me, but it mostly involves small business and retail, which is such a tough thing in this economy. but yes, i would love a career change from what i'm currently doing.

About 2 years ago I entertained the idea of going to massage school, but we didn't really have the extra money for tuition. And now it's too late to do anything with a baby on the way. It would be nice right now to find soemthing I could do from home.

  • I am in the process of this battle right now. My current job is not going very well but it is what I've done for 10 years I feel like its all I know how to do. I really don't want to go back to school - I have an MBA for goodness sake. But it is hard to change directions after 10 years plus I really don't know what I want to do. Looking back I could kick myself for not going into healthcare.
  • I have definitely considered it & would consider it in the future, but it would surely take a lot of thought, planning, and preparation for such a big change.

Ditto this. I'd like to be a small business owner.

  • I guess I could right now, I'm just too complacent where I am.  (which is not a good trait)

However, I would love to open up a small boutique of sorts specializing in baby items.

  • Seeing how babies might be on hold forever... I am currently going to school to be an EMT and hope to go to nursing school in the near future
  • i currently despise my job.  I'm sitting at home right now looking and applying for other jobs because I'm on the verge of walking out.  i think a full on career change is sometimes needed.  If you're not doing what you love then change it haha
  • I've been struggling with this a lot lately, especially since I'll be 35 in two weeks and I feel like I have very little to show for it.  It's been more than 10 years since I've had a job I would consider a "career."  Since then, I've just had "jobs."  There are so many things I'd love to do, and I've applied over the years for opportunities related to some of them but never gotten the jobs.  I wish I could go back to school, or open my own business - I'd love to have a little home decor/art gallery or maybe a stationary shop, but those things are not financially feasible right now.
  • I feel the same way as many of you. Right now, I'm at a complete lost of what to do next. When I took my job, I was basically led to believe one thing and got another and now it's been 2 years. So I'm looking for another direction, but there's isn't much of anything out there.
  • right now i'm considering it but not by choice.  i just need a job.

  • Dude, I *heart* Great Harvest, good for your coworker!

If I could, I would probably go to school for nursing.

  • I'm in grad school right now, and I plan to get a job in my field when I'm done. At this point I feel like I've gone to school for too long to *not* continue in my field. But if I could go back in time and pick something different, I might have done teaching (elementary school) or nursing. I think I would enjoy both.
  • Totally!  I just need to do it.  My mom and I talk about opening either a doggy daycare or a grooming facility.  I have lots of experience working in a kennel and with grooming.  I know we could do it, it's just actually doing it.  And yes, it would be a complete career change because right now I work in finance.

How funny! I work in finance too and really don't care for it. I like what I do, but just want to make a difference or just really enjoy where I work/people I work with on a daily basis.

I work in finance/accounting and feel the same way!  We might be onto something here!  I've looked into changing things up, but the money always seems to keep me in this field.  But hopefully I'll be able to switch to a SAHM in a few years.

  • Must be the finance thing. :) Maybe we should all form a new business and get out. haha.

  • I want to be an event planner.I keep playing around with the idea of starting my own business but I just won't put one foot in front of the other. I have no idea what is wrong with me.

I'm good at it and its a passion of mine. Maybe one day I'll get out there.

  • i did!!!

I earned my bachelors in advertising... worked for 3 different companies (getting promoted each time). Then after about 3 years i just decided it wasnt what i thought it was. i love the theory of it just not the practice.

I would really love to open a dance studio but that wasnt in the cards at the time and still isnt quite yet. So i became a teacher. Its a stepping stone for me. I have been teaching for 3 years now and coach the dance team. I plan to do this for a bit more... no definite plans. but i am very happy i switched. it was very scary and nerve racking at the time though.
