Does the entryway need something?
The coat closet is to the left of the door in the hallway. But should I have some sort of storage area for shoes and coats that we never put away promptly?

Re: Does the entryway need something?
I don't think so? I'm a bad person to ask though. I love this blog though and here's a post they did on a similar topic.
I missed that entry.
YHL. The problem seems to be my little area doesn't have a corner or little wall to it. I'd love to do something like keb's DIY project, but there doesn't seem to be the space for it.
Maybe some of those YHL nickel hooks and a basket type thing for shoes underneath?

I love their idea but I'm having a hard time visualizing where it would go. If it was me, I would rather put them in the closet if I'm going to take the time to put the shoes in a basket or hang my coat on a hook, might as well use a hanger. If you make another place for it, nothing will ever make it in the closet and then you'll just always have that clutter by your front door. I would maybe do a small table against the wall (sort of where that floating shelf is now) with a basket/bowl to toss your keys in or put down the mail or something.
Is this the main entrance you'll even use or will you come in through a garage for hte most part? If you come in through the garage and this will mostly just be used by guests, I wouldnt worry about putting anything there.

Hmm, hawki, I never even *thought* about which entryway we'll use. Since I'll probably get the driveway/garage since I have the better car, I think I'd be using the garage entrance. DH may use the front. And he doesn't know how to use a hanger in the wintertime.
I also think that floating shelf may stay, and it's cute, so for now I'd like to keep that. Maybe put a small bowl on top to act as a keycatcher?

Are you sure the seller's leaving the shelf behind? If I were moving out, I would want to take it, but I'll probably also take my curtains and drapes one day.
I think the shelf is too diminutive for the space and that whatever you put in that location needs to be anchored to the ground. I would put in a small console table, a chest of drawers (use the top as counter space and then hide stuff in the drawers), or a waist level bookshelf. Then put a larger mirror or framed piece of art above the piece of furniture to draw the eye up.
I think so and I think my realtor thinks so as well because it's pretty built in... or not. I don't know. If it's NOT there on closing day I like the idea of a console table. Thanks!

Here's what Crate and Barrel has under "entryway"
http://www.crateandbarrel.com/entryway-furniture/furniture/1
I think lots of these would work, so take your inspiration from here and then go find something cheaper. If you found something cheap on craigslist, a piece of furniture painted white would look good there.
Ummm...I kinda hate the shelf.
So if it's built in, I think you should add something next to it (maybe two or three more floating shelves along that wall in a cluster?). If it's gone, I think a console table would be perfect.
Also, if you don't want to put in more shelves, what about something like this:
(It's a charging station -- from Target)
SBS, you HATE that little shelf?
I love the C&B tables and the that Target thingie. Thanks, ladies!

Taking a completely different approach, would something like this work?
I'm having a hard time visualizing where the coat closet is but this was the first thing that popped into my mind.
Okay, hate is probably a strong word. It just seems so lonely. Like, my first thought when I saw the picture was "Huh, why is that little white shelf there all by itself? That's really weird..."
I think it may be because everything around it in the photo (aside from the wall trim) is in darker colors, so it's very HELLO! I AM WHITE SHELF IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR WALL!
Maybe if the picture above it was framed in white and/or the wall letters were white, it would "belong" a bit more?
It's also kind of bizarre because it's a small shelf just floating there. If it stays, it needs a chair beside it, a bigger mirror above it, or a large basket under it. It's hovering out of place.

I don't think your decor sense is off -- it just makes sense to you there since that's how the seller had it. Plus, it's easier to see with all THEIR stuff in it. I am just visualizing how it will look when that room/wall are both totally empty and there's just a white shelf floating there.
Plus, like I said, I think it can be worked with. I just think it's weird by itself.
lucky, say you just walked into the front door. To the left is a pocket door that is open to the hallway. If you turn left and walk about two feet is the coat closet.
I get what you're all saying about the little shelf floating in the wall. I bet it will look ridic when the room is empty! If it makes it better, I plan on replacing the entry doors! So there won't be that brown door anymore to lighten things up.
Lucy Elizabeth 10.27.12
You may not need to replace it. Our front door was hideous and we took the time to paint the inside of it. It now looks phenomenally better.
It's too bad we don't have photographic evidence, steph. ; )
Hmm... do you think I should do it that way? Our storm door is fug too, though. So I thought just replace them together. But keeping costs down would be awesome.
Lucy Elizabeth 10.27.12
And your taste is not bad. You've seen it in person and can see how it looks in the broad sense of the room. From our perspective, we're narrowing in on just the shelf and don't see how it fits in with anything else.
It will absolutely work in the space if it stays, and you will absolutely find something you love if it's not there.
I'm surfing CL for possible console/cabinet tables, and came across this beauty.
How perfect for H's mancave!
Lucy Elizabeth 10.27.12
HAHA. I shall take photos tonight for you and Leigha.
Ours was an oak panneling and it has some high frosted windows too. We used an oil primer on the door and then painted 2 coats of the same color paint as the trim (high gloss white). The paint makes it look much less outdated. I'd give that a try before you spend the money on a new front door (which will probably be $$$). If you don't like the storm door, you could just take it off and not replace it.
I think YHL has a similar front door (3 high windows)
ETA: No, YHL has one wide window. But their before picture looks just like your current door, and the after looks much better.
Yay for pics! Excited!
Well, at least this gives me options should the seller take the shelf. I like your ideas better anyway.
So weird - I just went to post YHL's door and saw your ETA on the top of my reply screen. They're similar though, and if it's good enough for them, it should be good enough for me.
Lucy Elizabeth 10.27.12
Weird--we were both looking it up at the same time.
I thought our front door was a lost cause too, and then we tried painting it, and it worked wonders. I bet YHL has a tutorial on it. It took a while to do, but it wasn't hard. DH globbed the primer on way too thick, and I have since usurped all the priming and trim painting duties. The back door that I did looks much better.
I like the little shelf, and the idea of putting a bowl to catch keys or mail. Only thing is I think the shelf feels a little bit low to me, so I'd definitely want to keep something above it like they have in the picture, but maybe a lighter color (instead of the black frame) to draw the eye up and balance it out more. Otherwise, I'd consider moving the shelf up closer to eye level ? most floating shelves are just mounted to the wall with 2 anchors, so it should be fairly easy to move and re-mount.
...and i agree with hawki about trying to stay away from adding hooks & things that will encourage clutter in your entryway.
