puppy obedience rochester
hi ladies! I don't post here often but was looking for some dvice. DH and I got our first puppy about a week ago, and are looking to sign him up for basic puppy obedience class. Can you recommend a place? Any good/bad experiences???
Right now I am considering going to Petsmart, or Dogs at Play on Monroe Ave, but am open to any suggestions. TIA!

Re: puppy obedience rochester
I am from Syracuse, so unfortunately I have suggestions for a trainer here, but not where you are.
But, I personally, dont trust the trainers at Petsmart... they are generally inexperienced kids who take a class through Petsmart, and suddenly begin training dogs... I would go with Dogs at Play for that reason alone.
We adopted Abby when she was about 1 year old, so no puppy class. But we got into a class a couple months after adopting her.
We did the beginners obedience class thru PetCo in Greece. We had a good experience, but that was bc we had a great instructor. He found out half way thru our class that he got promoted to be the trainer of the trainers. It was a few years ago so I don't know if he is still there. Although, in PetCo you learn the basics, but you learn a lot of tricks instead of real obedience. The trainer had actually worked with Abby twice a week for several weeks while she was brought to PetCo to be shown to be adopted. So as insane as she was, she would have been worse if he hadn't already put a lot of work into her.
We then did a second level obedience class thru DOTCORNY. Absolutely wonderful. We were the worst in the class though because the others had gone thru them for the first level and they learned a lot more than us at PetCo. Well, and probably because my dog is nuts haha.
We then got into an agility class at DOTCORNY. It was a great outlet for Abby and also made her look to me for direction and obedience.
All in all - I would say that places like PetCo and PetSmart are more for tricks and to socialize your dog. Which for a puppy is probably fine. But it could be hit and miss depending on which instructor you get. But I would recommend looking into DOTCORNY since their knowlege overall is so much more extensive and if you wanted to continue with classes you are already familiar with them.
I just checked out Dog At Play website. They seem good and quite similar to DOTCORNY. If your schedule works, I think you would get a lot more out of a place like Dogs at Play or DOTCORNY over a place like PetCo/PetSmart, especially if you choose to continue any classes in the future.
BTW Dill is super cute!
