Unreasonable request?

My mom has a home daycare and with Spring break next week she's busy.

I'm a teacher, so I have spring break next week. My mom asked if I would work for her one day. I told DH about this and I said I would do it if I could spend the money on spring/summer clothes. He thinks that's a crazy request and that it should go towards something else. I think that I'm already making salary and this is a little bonus.

Thoughts?

Re: Unreasonable request?

  • DH and I don't pool our money - we keep separate accounts so if I make a bonus (or he does) it's ours to do with as we please.

If it was me, I'd say I earned it so I'll spend it how I want!

  • I think it depends on what your financial situation is like. If you're good, then yeah, spend it. But if you have lots of debt/are not paying the bills/etc, then I think it's wrong to spend it whether it's "extra" or not.

  • Our bills are being paid. And we're getting a decent tax return.

It will probably be less than $100.

  • If you don't have any urgent debts to pay, then I say you should get to spend it however you want! It's your time and work, therefore your bonus money.

For the record, DH and I also pool our regular salaries, but occasionally I earn a little bit of extra cash playing music for weddings, etc. and he's totally fine with me treating it as my little treat.

  • I agree that if you aren't in some crazy debt repayment plan or anything that should be a bonus for you. Good luck getting him to see that!

  • If my husband had an issue with how I spent one hundred dollars (when bills are not an issue) I would be all over him about ever $ he was spending and every lunch out until he got the point :)

ditto. it was your choice to work on your vacation, spend as you please! yeesh it's only $100 it's not going to make or break the bank.
  • If you have no debt that needs paying off then I really don't even think you should have to ask how to spend your $100. Joe would laugh at me if I asked him to permission to spend it on myself.
  • Honestly, I don't think he should be able to tell you what to do with bonus money you earn (or any money you earn, for that matter). DH and I have always maintained seperate finances...I rarely have to justify expenses to him. Go shopping girl!
  • I think this is an excellent time to discuss financial goals / budget.  Right now DH and I are saving for two fabulous trips, so almost every extra penny goes there - including a portion of bonuses.  But we've agreed on that in advance so I would just put the $100 there without talking about it.  Spring shopping would come from our fun money accounts.  Large bonuses (tax refund, work bonuses, etc) are already split between some extra for our fun money (like $50 each) and long term savings, trip savings, extra mortgage payments.

For us this works.  I wouldn't say you're unreasonable for wanting to take the money shopping.  Just wondering what he thinks extra money should be going towards and it's worth further discussion imo.

  • DH and I have all of our accounts joint and all income is joint, no matter who does the work, so we discuss all spending. That said, he also would never tell me no to that sorta minor spending!

That's just how we have worked things out though, each couple is different. Maybe a good time for you two to sit down and talk about how you'd like to deal with income/spending and what not going forward.
