Budgeting Poll: Groceries

For you and your H (before you had kids if you do now):

1. How much do/did you average a week on groceries?

2. How many meals do you eat in/out?

3. Do you include other household items that you buy at the grocery store in this (toiletries, cleaning supplies, beauty items, prescriptions, etc.)?

I'll have my first "roommate" since college dorms in a couple of weeks and I'm wanting to go into the budgeting discussion with some good cost estimates, but I currently don't keep track of this at all and shop so sporadically, it'd be hard to even know. Not to mention, I haven't lived with a man since I was 7 and tend to make too little when I cook for both of us now...men sure can eat!

Re: Budgeting Poll: Groceries

  • 1. How much do/did you average a week on groceries?  We go grocery shopping every other week and usually spend $100-$125. I also use a tons of coupons too, which usually save us 5-10%.

    2. How many meals do you eat in/out? During the week, we usually plan to eat out 1 night, and then usually eat out on the weekends. A lot of it depends on my work schedule too and how many nights I'm working late.

    3. Do you include other household items that you buy at the grocery store in this (toiletries, cleaning supplies, beauty items, prescriptions, etc.)? It includes most everything except for prescriptions and some makeup/shampoo and conditioner.

  • We spent $100-$120/week on groceries. As an average, we tend to eat out 1-2 times a week for dinner, sometimes none. I buy largely organic products though which makes our bill a little more. We also bring our lunches to work most days.

That doesn't typically include toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc but might occasionally.

  • 1. About $100 a week if I cook just about every day (and I'd say probably $15-20 worth is wasted every week, sadly) Embarrassed. This includes my frozen dinners to take to work for lunch.

    2. We eat in almost every night, except Saturdays and some Fridays.

    3. That includes everything except hair products since I get those at the salon.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • 1. How much do/did you average a week on groceries?  This varies. When DH is travelling or we are unusually busy, we eat out more often. In those months we only spend about $250 at the grocery store. In the months when things are normal and we are eating at home (or on a health kick) we spend about $400 to $450. I do shop for deals and buy generic when possible, but I also speciality shop for healthy, fresh food and go to multiple stores. I definitely could buy food cheaper, but we like what we like.

    2. How many meals do you eat in/out? Normal months, twice ish? (ETA: This is a week, not month) Lately with DH's crazy travels and my weird schedule at work (at work until 7pm) it's more like 4-5 Embarrassed

     3. Do you include other household items that you buy at the grocery store in this (toiletries, cleaning supplies, beauty items, prescriptions, etc.)? Yes, this includes everything like - beauty products, toiletries, cleaning supplies, beer and wine, and DOG FOOD which is a big one, we have two big dogs. NOT prescriptions, I catagorize those under medical, because DH has high medical bills between his terrible teeth (Grrr my MIL) and his high blood preassure.

  • 1. How much do/did you average a week on groceries? We spend about $75 dollars a week on groceries. I cook pretty much every day and we take leftovers or homemade sandwiches for lunch.

    2. How many meals do you eat in/out? We usually eat lunches and at least one dinner out on weekends. DH might eat out at lunch once a week, but not always and rarely more than.

    3. Do you include other household items that you buy at the grocery store in this (toiletries, cleaning supplies, beauty items, prescriptions, etc.)? Sometimes. It almost always includes cat litter and litterbox liners, but we try to get our paper towels, toilet paper, and other stuff in bulk.

  • 1. How much do/did you average a week on groceries?   Every two weeks( about) we spend 100.  Sometimes a little less though.

    2. How many meals do you eat in/out? We usually order in once a week or so and go out to eat twice a month. On average. Course we both cook at work and eat there almost everyday.

    3. Do you include other household items that y ou buy at the grocery store in this (toiletries, cleaning supplies, beauty items, prescriptions, etc.)? Yes that grocery bill includes everything. It's only a one bedroom apartment for now so it's cheap to clean and I'm not much of a girly girl with the beauty stuff. :)

Honestly, we're freakish in a way because we sometimes don't really eat much all day. When you are around food all day, you really don't want to look at it or cook it when you get home. :)

  • 1. How much do/did you average a week on groceries?

Our budget is $125/week... but we never hit it.  I say we're generally right at $100-$120 a week.

    2. How many meals do you eat in/out?  That is generally 5 dinner meals, and stuff to make lunches for DH.  Sadly, we only eat about 4 of them - so I have meal that can spillover into the next week.

    3. Do you include other household items that you buy at the grocery store in this (toiletries, cleaning supplies, beauty items, prescriptions, etc.)?

This includes everything except perscriptions.  When I have to buy cleaning supplies I get closer to $125, but I also try to spread them out through the month so I can stay below budget each week.
