personal data privacy

so the post yesterday about spokeo has me all on edge now (my data has been removed as of this morning so thanks for letting us know about it!)  Today I get a call from a local number I don't recognize.  I answer it and it is Minnesota Bride magazine asking if I'd be willing to talk to them about my pre-wedding spa visit for an article they're writing for their next issue.  They knew which spa, what day, etc.  I have no idea how they got my number since all I have is an un-published cell number.  Right now, I am crossing my fingers and hoping that they got my info from the spa directly when they floated the idea of the story by them.  eeks.

Re: personal data privacy

  • That's wack.  We have a spa where I work and we would NEVER give someone information about ANYTHING without contacting the client first.
  • So .... are you going to do the interview?
  • I did answer their questions - they mostly were curious why I picked the spa I did and what services we used, would I recommend them to other brides, etc.
  • That is way crazy! I know vendors lurked on my local board, did you mention it on there? Still I don't know how they'd get your phone # though.

That spokeo post creeped me out too. Even though what they had about me was inaccurate, it made me think about how much information I give about myself online. Just signing up for random sites, facebook, shopping online, writing reviews, message boards- the list goes on. I use different user names for almost everything, so it may be harder to complie, but yikes!

Are you on the "do not call" list?  If not, you may want to sign up for it.  It won't protect you from getting calls from places you actually do business with, but will at least protect you from calls by people who get your information by buying a mailing list.

However, I would also say that danger from random strangers finding your information is vanishingly small.   I have been listed (under my full name) in the phone book for 37 years.  I have had a professional site that lists my name, address, phone number, and helpful links to maps of where my house is, since 1998.  During that entire time, I've received a few obscene text messages, and a whole lot of spam, but nothing more threatening than that.  (And how dangerous can an obscene text message be, if the sender won't give me his contact information in case I did want to do all those obscene things?)

Unfortunately, the danger from stalkers is mostly danger from people who have met you in person, and therefore would be most likely to already know your information from other sources.

  • I went to a bridal show and when I registered it asked for my info. Then when I went to it I gave my info to certain vendors I was interested in. 1 month after the show, they coordinators released all registration info to every vendor. I had calls, e-mail, and snail mail right up until the wedding.

David's Bridal also released my info because I bought my dress there. Spas called me saying I "won a free spa day". Or the USA Laser Academy called me saying I was able to get $100 off any procedure. One of the spas was close to my home so I figured I'd try it out. The lady TEXT me at 1AM to cancel. For one why would she text me and for two why would it be at 1AM??

Makes me think who else has my info.

  • @ 2d - yep on the do not call list even though it is just a cell.  I've actually turned in some folks for auto-dialing my cell phone too.  :)

I knew going in to the wedding fair with my sister that they shared info so I gave them bad info!  :-P Sorry random person who's number I made up and got my phone calls!!  David's Bridal is on my YUCK list because they gave out my info even though I said straight up, "under no circumstances do I want my information shared with anyone outside of Davids Bridal."  I still can't get off of the ice.com email list and got calls from all sorts of service providers.  When I asked how they got my number, it all went back to David's Bridal.  I honestly will never give them a dime of business if I can help it because of that.
