passport question

I am changing my name, and I have to renew my passport. I was just wondering a couple of things:

How long does it take to get the new one?

Since I am changing my name, will it be just like getting a whole new passport (not just a renewal)?

TIA :)

Re: passport question

  • Hopefully someone else will answer but I "think" it's taking about 3 weeks currently and is more like a renewal. Funny you ask because I'm going to do mine this afternoon.
  • Jenni is correct, it took exactly 3 weeks from the date that I mailed mine out to get it back.  You get a whole new passport, but the process is much quicker than getting the first one, so it is like a renewal.

I would try to get it done ASAP because I heard the rates are going up at the end of month.

  • Poop! I can't get my new passport until I change my name.

And I can't change my name until we get back from Utah at the beginning of May b/c all of our travel plans are under my maiden name (ie flights, rooms, etc).

I hope the rate doesn't go up a whole lot more.ugh.

Why not travel with your DL instead?  Your passport isn't necessary unless you're flying internationally.  Then you can change your name with the ss office and not have to do it right away for your DL.

  • crap! I still need to do this! it's only been a year and a half...
