NER: Are we the crazy cat ladies of the Nest?
I'm ok with it, if we are.
Re: NER: Are we the crazy cat ladies of the Nest?
Wait, who said this?
In any case, yes, yes we are.
Pfft, three cats. My sister's godmama has 8 now, 12 at her height. 3 is no where near crazy cat lady. I used to love going to visit her when I was little.
No cats here, but I'll be a crazy dog lady. I want to adopt all of the dogs from the shelter.
I'm OK with it too.
I think the number of cats you have should be limited to twice the number of humans. So bunny, between you and your H, you are fine with three. Just don't get two more.
That's good, too! We can branch out and be Crazy Animal Ladies.
Good, mesh, glad to hear it!
I've always heard cats are like potato chips--you can't just have one. I didn't understand that until we got our first cat. Now I just want a little brother or sister for her...
That said, I think there are quite a few puppy lovers on here too. I melt every time Zoe changes her siggy pics
And I'm as in love with my parents' puppy as I am my own cat so...
Nice! Hey, you're about to be able to have a total of 6! Who doesn't want a brand new baby and 6 cats running around?!
We are definitely stopping at 3! We only meant to have 2, but are suckers.
damn Dh and his cat allergies! I want a cat!
I mean, come on! Just because his throat closes completely and he breaks out in hives and can't breath doesn't mean we can't have cat, right? I think he's just overreacting
I kid my mom that she's becoming a crazy cat lady. She only has 2, but they are her children. I come third.
Aww! She kept the kitten?
Haha yeah I was thinking for a moment about the implications of my theory. I don't think anyone should have 8 cats, ever. I think 4 is probably the cap, unless you have a really huge house or something.
I really want to get a kitten, still. I think we are going to go to the shelter after Christmastime, when things calm down and the baby is a little older. Actually I'm hoping DH reads my mind and gets me one for Christmas. Normally I'm against giving pets as presents, but since we're going to get one anyway....
Definitely expand to CALs (crazy animal ladies) I was a CDL until my last dog died. We had cats with our last dog - they kind of wandered in off the street. When Jackson died, we started going cat crazy. My mom has just 2, and I have just the one. But I seriously need to have 5 more. And a puppy.
Aww...
Have you thought about seeing if DH can tolerate a breed that's less allergenic? If it's that severe, probably not, but you never know. DH is mildly allergic to cats - if he holds them next to his face or touches his eyes after touching a cat, he has a bad reaction. But he has no problems at all with our one cat Sonya, and I read somewhere that Russian Blue cats (which is what the shelter thought she probably is) are supposedly much less allergenic than others.
I agree. My aunt and uncle have had up to 9 before. It's really strange. They also currently have 3 dogs. I feel like it's a bit abusive to the animals. If it's temporary, that's one thing, but it's not so great as a permanent situation. My aunt is a little crazy with them. She doesn't even really like the cats, and just likes the dogs.
My grandfather died in 2005, and I had planned to take the cats. Then we had to sell the house a bit after (the cats continuted to live there and the neighbors or our family came in to be with them/feed them, etc.). I was still in college and lived on campus, so I couldn't take the cats yet. My aunt said, no problem, they can live with us (forever, we all thought). Then we moved into our apartment, and thought all was fine, the cats were settled with aunt and uncle. Then we found Timmy outside. My uncle called and told me to come get the cats. I barely had time to consider taking in these two 11 year old cats with my new kitten (we're talking like 12 hours, I'm not kidding) when my aunt called and said they'd put the cats to sleep. Nothing wrong with them. Just murdered them. This all literally happened in like two days. I also was just starting my new job, etc. It was crazy.
I'm still really, really angry and guilty about it. Those poor girls!
So when my SIL compared me to these family members for having 3 cats, I was not amused.
My grandma is in big trouble under this theory - she has 15 or 16! She is a true Crazy Cat Lady.?I can't imagine life without a cat around, but I think 3 is my limit. ?
Irish,
Get a bengal!!!!
I'm allergic to cats, too (monster sneezing, want to claw my eyes out because they itch so bad, can't breath because my asthma is triggered allergic), so when FI said he wanted a cat, I did some research.
I told him he had to get a hypoallergenic one. That meant he had to shell at $5000 and wait at least a year for a genetically engineered cat, or we could get a bengal.
Because bengals are more closely related to wild cats (the asian leopard cat to be precise), they don't release the allergens that other more "normal" house cats do. Plus, they're super cool looking, and they act more like dogs than cats (ours plays fetch, jumps in the tub, etc.).
Here's a video of our Justice Souter as a kitten if I haven't convinced you to get one yet:

Yay! Pics!!
Oh, and BB, I'm not being purposefully mean by not talking about your freakishly adorable new family members. I'm just shielding my eyes from them lest I develop kitten fever!
Because there's no way in hell that FI is going to let me get another kitten right now. Two people plus two full grown cats in small Manhattan apt = no room for more kitties. ::le sigh::
Clearly I am okay with us being the crazy cat ladies of the Nest.
