Leigha and Steph and anyone else with Austin experience

Have I already asked you guys for restaurant rec's near 6th street?  I need to find a place (preferably Mexican) for my sister's bachelorette party that will take reservations on a Saturday night.  We are staying at the Hilton near 6th street so it would be great if it was within walking distance.  The only thing I've found so far is the Iron Cactus... not sure how it is for a restaurant though.  Any suggestions?

Also - do you know of any karaoke bars in that area?

Re: Leigha and Steph and anyone else with Austin experience

  • Iron Cactus may be your best bet for downtown walking distance Mexican food. There aren't a ton of good Mexican places downtown.  They do a lot of rehearsal dinners and other get-togethers, so I don't think making a reservation for a B-party would be a problem. A lot of people really like the food and drinks there.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • The Iron Cactus is good and they're really proud of their tequila and margaritas.

If you want to head further west on 6th street, check out ZTejas.  I think the food's a little bit better, but it's more southwestern than true Mexican.

Other good places to check out downtown include:

    Bess on 6th street--It's Sandra Bullock's restaurant and I've heard it's good, but I haven't been yet

Max's Wine Dive--It's comfort food made higher end and they take reservations

Moonshine--They have great food and drinks and do a spectacular Sunday brunch.  It's about $16 per person, has a wide selection of food available, and two huge porches to sit on.  They don't take reservations Friday or Saturday night, but they do for Sunday brunch.

Of course, none of these places are true Mexican, but they're all local goodness.

  • Thanks for all the recommendations... Steph I wish I was going to be there more than 1 day - I want to go to all those places!
  • MOONSHINE! I love Moonshine!

(Okay, I've only been to Moonshine once, but I've begged and begged and begged my friend who lives in Austin to take me back again. We didn't have time to go last time I went to visit, but I'm thinking of making it mandatory on my next trip out there.)

  • I second Z'Tejas... it's truly fabulous! I think of 6th street as more for the college aged kids and West 6th/4th and 5th are more trendier older... at least that's what I get from it.
  • I have zero clue on karaoke.  Try posting on the Austin board to get the experts' opinion.  Everyone's really helpful over there.
