When you see a huge SUV...

do you assume anything?

I have never seen more than one or a couple people get out of a huge SUV, so I feel irritated.  And half the time, like the Cadillac Pickup trucks - are spotless, so I know they aren't using the truck for heavy duty stuff (like hauling construction materials around.

I generally assume the person is likely an aggressive driver, selfish (because of the environment), wasteful ($/gas/mpg).. and if we can be flame free.. arrogant?  I'm not trying to stereotype, but those are the people that I have seen come out of these vehicles.

Is that sort of a consensus with you guys?  Just curious?  I read someone's blog today and they said the same things I have always thought about the huge SUVs and the people who drive them.

Re: When you see a huge SUV...

  • I tend to think the same thing... I know it's a sterotype-I mean, what if they really have 12 kids or go off roading every weekend? Chances are though...a GIANT SUV/Truck isn't really needed!

  • LOL! You reminded me of the MADtv sketch were this woman got hit by an SUV and was like "I'ts okay, I just I hope all of your kids didn't see", and the driver said "Oh, I've only got one". The lady that got hit went on to say something sassy I don't remember....

Anyway, I live in a city of contradictions when it comes to vehicles. In the area where I live, there are tons of affluent people (I am absolutley NOT btw. We live in an 820sqft apt that might have asbestos...) and so I never really see SUV's unless it's a Mercedes or BMW. What we see alot of are Bentley's, little luxury sports cars, luxury sedans, and lots of high dollar imports (Maserttati, Ferrari).  I see that and think "Gee, those people are rich." If you drive 20 minutes out to a suburb, everyone has MASSIVE Suv's. Tahoes, Explorers, Yukons, ect. I see those and think "Hey, that lady can't drive, and probably has a ton of kids".

The only SUV's that rubbed me the wrong way were those AWEFUL Hummers. No matter what the size!

Oh. and speaking of gas, I remember when gas broke 2.00 here and the news was out interviewing people about how much it cost to fill up their car. I will never forget this guy they talked to that owned an Excursion that said it was $100.00 to fill up his car. They filmed his total when he was done and it was just that, and some change. I wonder what that guy is driving now?

  • ...I mistakenly go to get in and realize its not mine? Or is it?

I have 500 lbs of dogs, and need to transport mine and others. My SUV is necessary.

I'd love to have a commuter car but I can't afford one. When I was married we had a dog car and a commuter car and that was great.

I'm hoping within the next year or two to get a commuter car, but I'm not going to beat myself up over something I need, and can't really change at the moment anyhow. I try to make the best choices where I can. I need large transport and changing my vehicle isn't an option in any way at this time regardless.

Transportation is actually a smaller segment of our oil usage than the food industry, and I am very low-impact there. I also pay a lot in gas taxes because I get such low gas mileage. Would I prefer to drive something else? Sure, and I'd prefer to drive less too, but I don't live where there's public transportation.

    image
  • I often feel the same way. I also look down my nose at people who drive big a$$ trucks that don't look as though they need them to haul heavy stuff. I don't think I could date a guy who drove a big truck either.
  • If it's being driven by a man, I assume that he's got a small peen.  Particularly if he's driving a Hummer or a jacked up truck.

For some reason, I don't judge women for driving them.  Probably they had to get it to make their husband with the small peen feel better.  Wink  I kid, I kid.

However, nothing makes me angrier than seeing a Hummer.  It's a seemingly irrational hatred, but I just start seeing red and just want to ram my car into it.  But that'd be dumb, because I drive a smart, and I'd probably go right under it or something.

  • no, i don't. judge much?

my dh has a big truck. we try to limit it's use, but when he does drive it, it's because he needs to. (to tow something, to drive off-road, to pick up the skids and their instruments, when going camping, etc.)

  • I drive an SUV, but I have 2 big dogs and we do a lot of outdoorsy activities, so I feel like we need it. Sure I'd love to trade it in for a hybrid version, but what we have is paid off, and don't you think maybe it's more eco friendly to not be purchasing a new car, considering all that goes into the production? Plus I take the bus to work, and I live in a dense metro area, so I rarely even leave a 4 mile radius. I'd hate to think I'm being judged for driving a mile to the grocery store once a week... sheesh.
  • I always wonder what people think about me - I drive a small BMW wagon, and our second car is a BMW convertible - but they are new and shiny and I assume people think I'm rich or snobby...nope, my husband works for BMW!

So I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt....

Ok sometimes I think small penis when I see a big truck!!!

  • We just got a small SUV. small meaning it has the same gas mileage as DH's old car. however my dan drives a huge 1 ton truck. its spotless and you would never know he needed it except that he does. they own a mom and pop home imrpovement store and he delivers hundreds of pounds of cabinets, countertops, and bath tubs multiple times a week.

Yes I think that there are a lot of people out there who are using them and its a waste but I try not to stereotype knowing that my dad has a spotless truck and he is always the only one in it but he really does need it.

  • Honestly?  I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but the majority of the big SUV drivers in my area are older Asian women.  So when I see a huge SUV I assume it's an older Asian woman.  I don't really know where that leaves me on my opinion of them.  Maybe they're just less educated on eco-matters?  Or believe they are safer vehicles? Or are easily swayed by the guy in the car lot trying to sell them on the most expensive car he can get them to buy?  Or they like how they handle?

However if I see a Hummer I just assume you're an arrogant jacka$$ flaunting the wealth you probably don't have anymore because the economy crashed but you can't sell your gas guzzler to anyone with any sense so you're stuck with it and are basically a screwed loser.  :)

    ETA:

My husband drives a Ford F-150.  He bought it to haul around the trailer that he lives in when he works in LA, which he does 4 months out of the year.  It's cheaper then getting a lease on an apartment.  He also sleeps in his truck sometimes when he gets stuck at work so we have it set up with a bed, a small "kitchen", and a make-shift bathroom in the back under the camper shell.  That probably looks bad but is a necessity for us.

So we use it to haul, we use it to get rest, and my husband carpools with two co-workers in it.  He also keeps it in perfect condition.  It rarely had dirt on it and he gets it detailed often.  So to the untrained eye it looks like it's never used, but it gets it's fair share.  It's also what we use to haul our recycling down to the center once a month because, in my area, they just through the recycling bin into the same truck as the trash.

So I try not to judge too much.

  • I make the same assumptions and absolutely hate the vehicles.  Partially b/c in my college it was 'trendy' for rich girls to get a high-end SUV (Lexus, BMW, etc.) and I know that there was absolutely NO practical reason for it. I remember this coming up in an ethics class and one girl said "well, I need mine b/c I like to go skiing."  -- Really?  You need an SUV for that??  She had a hard time elaborating on that excuse.

The other reason that it pisses me off is that they are seriously a hazard on the road.  Many of the people who don't really need them also don't know how to drive them -- treating them like a smaller car or assuming that they're invincible.  Plus, I can't see around them in my appropriately sized car; and they take up way too much room in parking lots (especially when they insist on squeezing them into a compact car space).  So they ding up my nice little Civic with their huge-ass doors.

Grrr... sorry, this is such a sore subject with me. I know that there are exceptions - people who DO need/use the space, and can drive/park them safely.  However, I'm fairly sure that they are in the minority.

  • I don't think that judgement is fair.

I drive a huge SUV. I don't have any kids. I have a huge dog who doesn't fit in a car, yes, my choice.

But, I only drive 16 miles per day and I bought it used at a time when I was hauling a trailer frequently. I will also drive it until it is absolutely dead, it is 8 years old right now...so another 6-8 years probably? I would argue that this is way better than me getting rid of it and buying a Prius or something.

  • Yes I judge, I'll be honest. I'm with Jeff & Em, I think the guy's got a small peen and the woman likes to sit high on the road because she's a control freak.  Probably why she married a man with a small peen Stick out tongue

I understand and recognize that some people need SUVs, like Alisha.  But if I see an SUV that's super clean, shows no wear and tare, and has the "(school mascot here) VOLLYEBALL" or whatever sport on the back, I do judge and assume the driver is not one of those good people.  Seriously, drive a station wagon.  Better gas mileage and you can still fit your precious only child and all their stuff.  Oh wait, your DH with the small peen won't be seen in a wagon or minivan.  Klassy.

The largest Hummer dealership on the East Coast is a mile from my house.  I drive past it every.day and almost always flip it off and yell something like "OH JUST CLOSE DOWN ALREADY!!!!" Sooooo many people in my neighborhood drive pristine, squeaky clean Hummers.  I purposefully roll up next to them at the gas station in my Prius and watch them get annoyed at their $100+ tabs.

  • No. I don't judge and I think that people who are judging are kinda a-holes.

  • I never understood what was the big deal about needing an SUV to haul stuff. I drive a VW wagon and I was able to fit a full size dryer in the back (with the back seats down). You don't "need" an SUV.

This. DH drives an SUV, and we have no plans for getting rid of it anytime soon because it's paid for and has very low mileage. We are very conscious of our eating habits, eating veg 90% of the time and shopping at the farmers market every weekend. No judging here!

Hehe, I love the irony.  :)

  • I don't judge...mainly because I drive one :)

I have to haul 200 lbs of dogs (sometimes 300 lbs when the dog we sit is over), one kid who seems to require a ton of_shit, one husband and a boat with it. I also drive A LOT for my job and in a city where everyone else drives one too, you don't want to be the one in a small car WHEN you get in an accident (it's when, not if).

i think they are more versatile. so if you need the space inside and something that will tow, you get the suv. any kind of van would not cover all of our needs, it would have to be a truck or suv.

  • I don't judge because I am not perfect.
  • I see an SUV or mini-van and my first thought is "You really don't need that!"  My mom has a mini-van.  She bought it back when I was in college and my sister was in HS.  She knew she'd be using it to move us in and out and haul us and our guys around, so it was worth it.  Now she's talking about getting an Escape to replace it with.  I've been out of the house for over 3 years and my sister's got her own car and will be done with her undergrad soon.  It's so frustrating that the woman who taught me to recycle and not waste things wants an SUV when she'll be the only one in it mainly!

  • For me it depends on where I am.  DH and I live a little outside Nashville.  In the area where he works, it's packed with wealthy people whose spoiled rotten teens cruise around in the biggest SUVs available.  It's like a haven for oversized, overpriced SUVs there.  It really makes me mad, especially since those vehicles can be difficult to manuver around and the stupid kids are just throwing them around with little experience and no regard to others. Their parents aren't much better.

Where I work it's small town and very country.  Very few people actually have large SUVs, but many have huge trucks.  While some are obviously souped up to make up for lack of manhood, the majority are actually used in an appropriate way.  A very large percentage of the people who live here own horses.  It's what the town is known for, not just locally but worldwide.

  • Eh, I don't judge. My FIL has a Hummer and he is the nicest, sweetest, most generous man ever. He just happens to like the car. I wish he chose something smaller b/c he doesn't *need* all that car for just him, but he has a right to have the kind of car he likes. I don't judge people who spend more on certain foods for their pets or shoes or decorating their homes or whatver, because it's their choice to buy what they like. Even if in my opinion they don't "need" it.

However, I do judge people who drive cars covered in obnoxious bumper stickers. I roll my eyes and probably won't let them in front of me just because I think it's soooo annoying.

  • I try not to be judgey but it happens Embarrassed  I am looking for a SUV now and to find one for a reasonable price with good gas mileage is hard. Most of the time they only get about 16/20 mpg. I don't like the idea of using that much gas but I need the space for the kids. Fortunatly, I am a SAHM so I won't be doing that much driving. If I were a single woman I would find it extrememly wasteful to drive alot by myself using a gas guzzler all for the "glory" of a nice car.

It really grinds my gears to see a single person in a HUGE definitly not needed vehicle like a Hummer or Escalade.
