Gardeners - heirloom breed veggies?

Hi all - I'm dreaming of my garden this year and have a question for you all.  I'm debating doing all heirloom variety stuff and am curious if anyone else has ever grown something like that before?  Did you have good results?  Bad results?  Same as with "regular" breeds? 

I'm digging the non-homogenous thing with the veggies but I've heard that sometimes the heirloom breed crops can crash because they're not as disease tolerant as the ones you get at the garden store.  Hoping for some real world gardeners to tell me their experiences so I can be a more informed gardener.  :)

    I've not grown heirloom (this will be my first year), but my parents have and always get a good crop.  The heirlooms always get the same treatment as the regular plants--also, my parents never use chemicals or feeders.  Semi-related, I would recommend starting from seed rather than plant; this will allow you to control conditions from the beginning of time rather than trusting the greenhouse to start them right.  I had a terrible experience a couple years ago by trying to save time and buying plants rather than starting seeds.

    We grew some heirloom tomatoes last year and they all did really well (and tasted AMAZING!).  They produced as much or more than the other varieties which is sometimes a complaint against heirloom plants.  The only exception is my giant greet tomato plant that got eaten by a gopher.  I was so mad I almost cried.

    I'm so jealous of this conversation. I wish I could grow veggies. I live in FL though and it gets SOOO hot and the sun dries everything out. Plus, we just have sand, no dirt! I wish I knew how to grow veggies...

    You may not get veggies but I bet that you've got access to some amazing citrus that I'll never have!  :)  Oranges, Lemons, Limes, etc don't do so well with our cold and limited winter sun. 

     Up til now - I've just done container gardening but this year, I'm going all out.  Kinda excited!
