DH & I have a budget for everything, one of them is on how much we can spend per week on groceries. It's tight and it seems like every week we barely make it. To be fair, we almost never eat out unless one of our parents treats, or we have a gift card somewhere.
Well last night I was telling him how it just makes me sick to throw away food now. Now that we're paying for it every week and it's all out of our pocket, it really super irritates me to throw away anything. LOL. Luckily we're really good about leftovers, but there are always things that expire or whatever and you have to get rid of them.
It's funny how things change when it's all on you.
Re: something I find funny now
That is one thing I love about not being a grad student anymore - we don't really pay attention to what we spend at the grocery store anymore :-) Maybe we should, but we cook at home and don't go over board, so I don't think we could save THAT much. As grad students though, there were times I ran to the parents house to eat until my next pay check!!
With a family of 6 we definitely pay attention and try to save money at the grocery store. We were spending $300 per week and have now cut it back to around $150. Both of those included eating out as well as eating at home. DH and I eat very well because we both love to cook. This week alone we have had green-chile chicken casserole, shrimp pad Thai, and ginger curry rubbed lamb chops. In order to save money though we look at the sales papers and clip coupons.
