Hi ladies! DH and I are moving to Boston in the middle of May from Kaiserslautern, Germany. We've been living over here for almost five years and DH is being transferred to MA. (He's in the Army, and he'll be working as a recruiter in Quincy). I was so happy and excited when I found out about his new assignment-I LOVE Boston and I'm thrilled that we'll be living there! I'm on an apartment hunt now, and I have a few promising leads, but would definitely appreciate any advice on places to live. Also, since I haven't been to Boston since high school and DH has never been there, could I have some recommendations on where to eat, what to see, any cool places to go the first couple of weeks when we're getting settled?
TIA!
Re: Intro
Welcome!
We live in Braintree right now (though we are closing on a house in a different town in a couple of months), which could also be a good option for you (close to Quincy and also easy to get into Boston). Apt prices get you a good space here. Good luck!
Welcome to the board! We're a small group right now but feel free to jump right in.
I don't know the south shore very well so I can't help with housing suggestions.
As for things to do, I'll post my usual list later tonight when I'm back on my home computer (the ladies here have already seen it a bajillion times). In terms of what to eat...so many options! You might want to help us narrow down if you're looking for anything in particular--price, geography, cuisine. Some of my faves:
Pricier: Blue Ginger, No. 9 Park, Mistral, Catch, Salts
Mid-Range: East Ocean City in Chinatown, Little India in Waltham, Daikanyama for sushi in Lexington
Cheap: Hong Kong Eatery (Chinatown), Hei La Moon for Hong Kong style dim sum (Chinatown), Chung Shin Yuan for Taiwanese-style dim sum (Newton)
Welcome to the board and congrats on the big move. I hope it goes well. I lived in Braintree when I first moved up here and it was really convenient to a lot of things, particularly downtown.
There's SOOO much to do here. Depending on the cuisine of your choice, there's pretty much anywhere to eat. if you like sports, do a tour of Fenway. If you want to really see a lot of Boston, do a duck tour.
Good Luck
Thank you everyone! As far as favorite types of cuisine, I think it's safe to say I could eat sushi morning, noon and night.
DH and I also love Mexican, Thai, and of course the best pizza places in town.
As far as living in the city...we would like to be as close to Boston as possible, but we have a beagle who will occasionally howl so we don't want a cramped apartment (I don't want our neighbors to hate our guts before they even meet us!). We were thinking about a townhouse or duplex, so probably South Boston or South Shore. Still looking!
Thanks for all the advice, we're really excited about moving.
Welcome to the area (almost). I spent quite a few years over in Germany when I was growing up (dad was in the air force). I enjoyed it a lot but imagine you must be thrilled to be returning to the states.
