period after birth

i started my period four weeks after delivery. it started out brown nearly black and for the past 3 days it has been heavy, bright red, and a lot of clots. today is my 7th day on it. does that sound normal? how long will the first period after birth last? my regular period before pregnacy lasted 3 to 4 days.

Re: period after birth

  • Everyone is different.  If you saturate more than a pad per hour, pass a clot larger than a  or if it has an odor you should call your doctor.

Were you very anemic after delivery?  If your hemoglobin had dropped very much, your doctor may want to check it again.

If you are feeling tired, run, down, faint or dizzy, keep an eye on things.  Recently, I took care of a patient who hemmorhaged 6 weeks after delivery, so keep track of your bleeding.

  • well I would bring it up at your 6 week PP appointment. Since the Dr. will do an internal to make sure everything is healing properly.

My first period pp wasn't until ds was 7 months but it was pretty heavy.  I don't remember any clots though.  I did have some clots right after birth when my uterine lining was shedding from the pregnancy.

  • Call your doctor... I would be a little concerned. How are you feeling?
