Talk to me about Northern York SD

We thought we would try to stay in Mechanicsburg SD and considered a few other areas in Cumberland County but we are now considering expanding our search to the Dillsburg area.  I don't know anything about that SD.  Is there a general consensus?  Any websites to read reviews, stats, etc?

Thanks!

Re: Talk to me about Northern York SD

  • Hi Christina!  I'm at work and don't have a ton of time right now, but Megan, Erica, and I all went to Northern (as did my parents and my grandparents in the school district that preceded it).  My parents live in Dillsburg and my mom works in the elementary schools as an aid and they both help with high school sporting events so they are still pretty involved with the schools for that perspective.  Do you mind if I email you, it won't be right away though?

  • I don't have any personal experience with Northern, however my co-worker went to Northern as did her children and now her grandchildren.  From what she told me it is a very good school district.  She actually worked there years ago as an aid and in the office.  I think if you google it you can usually find review almost any school district to include test scores, etc.

  • I have no advice on the school district, but Great Schools typically has some helpful info about schools/school districts.  GL!
  • I loooooooooooved going to Northern.  I feel I had a great education there.  Currently I am a teacher and I know the amount of work that goes into my job, so I know the amount of work my teachers put into my education.  When I started teaching I was offered a position at Wellsville Elementary in the EXACT classroom that inspired me to teach.  Unfortunately when the district told me my salary I had to decline. (I was living on my own out of college and had an offer $6000 more and I knew I'd be moving to the Philadelphia area with 2-3 years) Northern is the lowest paying district in the county.

I was SHOCKED... why? Because I received a top notch education at Northern and never would I have thought that my teachers were making pennies. I would LOVE for my children to go there.

  • Both Justin and I went to Northern, as Stacey mentioned. I had a very positive experience and feel that overall, it's a great district. Also being in the education field, I believe that the elementary teachers did a wonderful job and are all very dedicated to their jobs and most probably went above and beyond. When I went through high school, they had honors courses and several AP - would have liked to see more AP at the time, although I wouldn't be surprised if they've added more since. I felt completely prepared for college and tested out of a lot of the basic freshman classes due to having some great teachers in the english lit and foreign language areas.

We talk about moving back to the area (although mostly wishful thinking) and I would feel confident putting Ella there. It sounds like Stacey has stayed up to date on things, so hopefully that will help as well as Great Schools- definitely check that website out!

Good luck :)  There's a great new neighborhood that Justin and I always drive through and we have a home "picked out" in case we ever make the move!
