Avenue Q

Has anyone else seen it?

Hilarious! I didn't want to go. I thought it looked dumb (I mean, puppets? Really?) But DH really wanted to see it. I was dying!  The songs were funny as hell. "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" and "If you were gay."

I recommend it. I do, however, warn Reps that they do have a couple of Bush and Rep digs in there.

Re: Avenue Q

  • I haven't seen it, but a friend of mine played me some of the music. I love Everyone's a Little Bit Racist. I find myself saying that all the time, particularly when GmcG jokingly calls me racist. And never forget...The Internet is for Porn!

  • Favorite.Musical.Ever.

It's sooo funny.  I love it.  My DH sat through the entire first act with his mouth hanging open.  Love it.  Also recommend it to everyone.

  • Haha, I love Avenue Q!!  I quote it all the time on here - now you'll know what I'm talking about. :)

My friend was down to the final 2 for Kate Monster on the national tour and would have been so perfect. boo.

I do wonder what they'll use in place of 'george bush' at the end, though, after January 20.

And no worries - I never expect theatre to be anything but overwhelmingly liberal.  I just saw Billy Elliot last night - is that still running in London, too?  It is a definite must-see.  Those boys are incredible.  I saw it with Kiril Kulish and have been watching youtube videos of his dancing and piano playing all morning.  I promise I'm not a perv, he's just soooo good.

  • I haven't seen it, but I want to! ?One of DH's favorite youtube videos uses The Internet is for Porn. ?We sing it all the time, lol.

It came to the Kennedy Center but I missed ?it. ?Boo.?

  • I saw it in Portland when I went back to the States a few months ago.  We were roaring with laughter.  In fact, just last night, I had to start asentence with "the internet is for..."  H of course finished it for me

  • I should add - it also makes fun of political correctness, etc.  I think Billy Elliot might be more liberal than Avenue Q with its pro-socialism theme, lol.  And Les Mis?  Yikes. Haha, no wonder most (80%) lose money - they're so anti-capitalism.

I think my dad would really like Avenue Q, and he's pretty conservative.  Of course, his favorite musical is Cabaret, so conservative doesn't have to = close minded. :)

I really wasn't trying to imply that :( I was just giving a heads up that there were some republican jokes.

I haven't seen Billy Elliot but I want to! ITs on our list. DH loves musicals (as do I ) so we are trying to see as many as we can. We've seen this, Avenue Q, We Will Rock You. Les Mis. Wicked....and I feel like I'm missing one. Hmmmm. We've each seen a few on our own, too. But we have a long list of ones we still want to see. mama Mia is booked solid for months because the movie is out! Darn.

Oh I know you weren't!  I was more just making fun of my dad b/c you wouldn't necessarily expect a middle-aged conservative former-judge to like a musical featuring an affeminate gay man singing about a manage e tois with 'two ladies', one of which is actually a boy. ;)

Billy Elliot = amazing.  Everything a theatre-goer would want in a musical.

Avenue Q = hilarious.  Great for the 20s/30s crowd.

Les Mis = great music, a classic.  Otherwise, meh.

Mamma Mia = Ick!.  And that's coming from an Abba fan.

    Lets see...other West End musicals...

Carousel - a classic, one of R&H's first (the first?).  Very old time romantic/tragic.  Watch it in the context of how innovative musical theatre was at the time.  I don't know anything about this specific production.

Chicago - one of my all time favs, but with older casts can sometimes lose some of its pizazz.

Jersey Boys - I haven't seen it yet, but I've only heard wonderful things, and I know it definitely has a wide appeal.  I think it's done so well here in New York in part because it's a show housewives in Jersey are able to drag their husbands to, kwim?  But still, very entertaining and great music.

La Cage Aux Folles - Haven't seen it, but love the story.  Have you seen the Bird Cage?  Same thing.

The Lion King - Can you really go wrong with Elton John and Julie Taymor?  I don't think so.

Oliver - has a special place in my heart (I played an orphan boy/pick pocket when I was 13).  I think it'll be great in London.  Darker, but not as 'meh' as Les Mis.

Sound of Music - great christmas show. Wink  Another classic, but I probably wouldn't pay to go see it unless I needed a show to take kids to.

The Last 5 Years - One of my fav's... but I'm not sure how good of a 'date' musical it is, as it's about the beginning and end of a relationship. *shrug*

How was We Will Rock You?  I like Queen.  Did it have a story or gimmick or was it just a jute-box musical?  The best stuff on Broadway tends to come from London, so let me know about the hot stuff there! :)

One of my sorority sisters who's moving back to London in a month is quasi-obsessed with Propeller.

  • We will rock you was fun, but there was no real story. So that part was bleh.

I love lion king! I've actually seen it in NYC and London, haha. Same with Phantom. I really want to see Sound of Music. That was my favorite movie growing up, but it looks like I'll have to drag Dh to that one. He's protesting pretty hard :)

The two best songs in Sound of Music aren't in the movie.  You'll have to let me know if they have them or not.  I don't remember the names, but they're the duets between Elsa (the baroness) and Max.  (I may have played Elsa in my school's production....)

  • SO freaking hilarious! We saw it in London a few years ago! I looooooved it!

I loved Jersey Boys. So good. I saw it here in SF two years ago, and was very impressed. Great music, of course.

Lion King is one of my all time favorites! ?
