Big Island vacation house rentals?
Okay, my family has decided that we're having a reunion next year on the Big Island and Maui (YAY!) - we want to rent one house to sleep 12 of us (require 7 beds) and we'll do separate condos on Maui. The condos aren't a problem, but the house will be.
Does anyone have any experience renting a place on the Big Island that would sleep that many people?
Re: Big Island vacation house rentals?
just wanted to say I am pretty jealous of your reunion! That is going to be so much fun to go back esp with all of your family & friends. I wish I could relive that trip every year!
and maybe I am off, but wasn't their a website a lof the knotties used for finding timeshares? I think it was V-something...maybe they have houses on there too? or what about craigslist?
Not too much info, but hope you find something!
I think you're thinking of vrbo - I've checked there, but you never really know if you're getting good deals or not. I'm scared of renting a place where there's no security blanket! Because there are 5 couples + 2 singles, we'll need 7 bedrooms, and that's a real challenge to find... especially because we want to keep it for under 7000 for the week.
We're looking at this one:
http://www.ohanaretreat.com/
which has 8 bedrooms, but isn't right on the water or this one:
http://www.hawaiishangrilavacations.com/index.php
which has tons of great reviews, but only 5 bedrooms. No one is willing to sleep on a pull out couch, which I get, but it's finitely a pain in the butt.

hmmm...well what about a travel agent? You might have to pay their fee, but if it makes the search easier, it may be worth it.
The Ohana Retreat looks really nice, but how far is it from the water? Maybe it would be worth it just b/c the size it big enough?
Did you try calling the ShangriLa place & asking if they have any other properties (or know of any) that would be big enough?
I think I am officially living vicariously!
The Ohana Retreat is just south of the Sheraton Keahou - I don't think it has an ocean view at all... which is really a major drawback. I'm a bit concerned about the vog.
If we'd had 18,000$ for the week to spare, there were some AMAZING homes on the Kohala coast. But alas, no such luck.
Do you have any travel agent recommendations? I've never tried using one before, and this might be a great time to start.

I have never used an actual travel agenct before, but I just googled "travel agent hawaii" and it brought up lots of hits. This was one & it listed a lot of agencies: http://gohawaii.about.com/od/travelagents/Travel_Agents_Specializing_in_Hawaii.htm
The closest I ever got to a travel agent was expedia. The first time we went to Hawaii, we booked airline & hotel through them. They were super helpful & helped pick out hotels that fit exactly what we were looking for. I don' t know if they ever rent houses, but it might be worth a shot.
and you could always try Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau: (808) 923-1811
There was a knottie who had her wedding/reception at this house in Kona. It is a two house rental which totals 7 bedrooms. She had nothing but good things to say about it. Sorry, I don't remember her name.
