Updating the Passport Today

One of my final name change to-do's. Figuring I should go ahead and just get it over with. Anyone else done this...seems pretty cut and dry. Am curious what the turn around is on it though.

I just did it a couple weeks ago, barely coming in under the one year deadline to get it done for free. I printed out the form from the passport website and had it already filled out when I got to the post office. That way the only thing they had to do was take my picture and staple it to the paper. I had them mail it for me straight from there. I would have only been there about 10 minutes if the lady working behind the counter didn't have her head up her butt, but that is a whole other story. I ended up being there for half an hour, but in reality it is very cut and dry like you expected.

I did mine in September. I won't need it till we go to Bermuda in June, but I wanted to get it done ahead of time. I mailed everything in and I think it was about 3 week turn around. They do need a certified copy of your marriage license, which they return seperately from your new passport.

Is there a 1 year deadline to get it for free from your wedding or 1 year after getting a new one, you can change it for free? I'm figuring I'll have to pay the $80 or whatever it is now to change mine...

It is one year from the date it is issued.

I think passport fees are going up too. So anyone who is dillydallying on the name change should go ahead and do it now so that you can pay the lower rate.

Good to know Steph... I should just go ahead and get mine done even though I wont need it again until next summer.

Thanks for sharing that article, steph. My passport expires July 27, so I need to get it renewed with a name change soon anyway. I'm holding off until mid-April when I get my license back (from the speeding ticket). I think DH's passport expired in February, so we need to get his renewed too.

Word of that fee increase is what spurred me on to get this over with.

Also, I just filled out the form and if you have a current passport in the maiden name it isn't necessary to submit even a copy of the drivers license. I think it said I needed passport, new pictures, official marriage license and the $$. I thought they might need a copy of my license or my new ss card...but there was no mention of it.
