Colonoscopy

Anyone ever had one? The doc told me this morning that she would like for me to get one.

Does it hurt?  I heard the actual procedure was fine, but it was the day before that was the worst.

Re: Colonoscopy

  • I had one when I was 21.  No pain whatsoever! The day before is the worst part about it for sure.

They gave me IV meds and I was loopy for the procedure for sure!

  • Thanks! I was just reading up on it and one comment was to stay close to a bathroom the day before. This sounds like it's going to be interesting.
  • I have.  The actual procedure was nothing.  I was def out of it on IV's and loopy afterwards.  The day before IS HORRIBLE.  I had to take Fleet- umm- YUCK.  You and your bathroom will be bff.  Just imagine a waterhose for #2.  No joke.  At one point I was so over drinking the the fleet that I had it coming from both ends.  Good luck!
  • I had some serious gastro issues, so I've had my fair share.  The procedure is a breeze, as long as you'll be knocked out.  Not painful at all.  Aftewards you are just a bit gassy.  DH had one recently and had to start taking the meds at 4pm the day before.  He said that worst part was being hungry.

I used Fleet for mine, but DH had a new medicine that didn't have any flavor.  He had to mix it in Gatorade and said he couldn't tell it was in there.  His doctor also gave him anti-nausea medicine, which I would request.  He didn't feel sick at all, so I think it really helped!

  • Same here... I was knocked out for mine, but the day before OMG it sucked Tongue Tied
  • I have had 1 (and probably will be having another in May) and the prep is def the worst part.  There are usually a couple of options as far as how you want to take the poop meds.  Just make sure you've got some soft TP and a couple magazines :)  If you have a choice in scheduling the time for the procedure, try to get it done early so you won't starve!

  • Thanks everyone! It looking like May for me too, after DH gets back. He'll have something extra special to look forward too. Stick out tongue
  • I had one a few years ago, and like everyone else, the day before sucks.  I took the fleet phosphasoda (sp).  It tastes like snot.  My advice (it's what my mom had me do and she is a nurse)...mine was scheduled at 7am on a Saturday.  They told me to switch to clear liquids Friday at noon.  I switched to clear liquids Thursday at noon and didn't have to have the enema the morning of.  It sucks because you are hungry, but I DID NOT want an enema.  The procedure itself was fine.  I was completely out and I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time.  I was gassy after...
