WWYD?

I need opinions.  I've gotten my appointment for getting a 2nd opinion from a new gastroenterologist in CLT for May 3rd.  The problem is that is over a month away and I'm dealing with quite a bit of pain and nausea.  I can't tell you the last time I had a full meal (I've lost close to 4lbs since Wed).  I called my doctor to get her opinion on seeing one of the other doctors in the practice.  She said that its my choice but she doesn't know of the other doctors so she can't really give a personal reference like she can for the one I'm scheduled to see (she speaks really really highly of him and knows he will be the gastro she sees when the time comes).  So...Would you...

1- Take a chance with one of the other doctors to get an appointment sooner?

2- Ride it out to see the recommended doctor?

I know this is one of those personal decision moments but I'm really torn.  Any advice?

Re: WWYD?

  • Can you keep the appt scheduled with him for a month from now AND see one of the other dr's asap? If you are comfortable with what the other dr. says then cancel the appt for the Big Deal guy. A month seems a long time to wait if you are in a lot of pain.

  • I'm not sure about doctor/patient etiquette, but what about seeing one of the other ones now and switching to the recommended one later? Can you find any reviews on some of the other doctors?
  • I would do something similar to what Buckin suggests.  From my experience, most doctors do book up fairly quickly and/or tend to not have anything soon for availability.  What I would do in your situation would be to call around, see when the first available appt would be (I doubt you'd be able to see someone sooner than a week) take it, and then decide if you are satisfied with that person's opinion or if you still want to go see Big Deal Doctor.
  • can your general doctor or your old gastro give you any advice just to yourself more comfortable during this waiting period? i feel so bad for you b/c its such a struggle getting through these rough days knowing how many more you have to go.

when i've had GI problems in the past i try to fatten up my calorie intake with Ensure Plus.

  • Thanks ladies!  I was able to get in to see the PA on Monday afternoon (the 5th).  If I leave unsatisfied, I'll wait it out for the Big Guy.  I'm hoping we can at least get the ball rolling if I'm going to need another colonoscopy.

  • I would call the Big Guy's office and explain that you are in pain but really don't want to see another doctore.  And you would appreciate them giving you a call if any appointments are cancelled and they could squeeze you in earlier.  Sometimes I think making a friend with the receptionist can go a long way!  GL!

ETA:  I would also ask if there are any preliminary tests (like a colonoscopy) that you could take before your appointment so the dr could already have your results to discuss with you.

  • I would go see one of the other docs, a month is a really long time to wait.
