What do you think about this idea for my 30th bday party?
A luau. In my backyard. Like, a real one, with hula dancers.
What do you think? Joe and I pondered the idea of digging a pit and cooking a pig in the backyard, too, but thought that would sort of kill our landscaping :-)
I would have to push it to May, though (my bday is in April) just so it's warm enough for us to be outside.
Re: What do you think about this idea for my 30th bday party?
I think the idea is fun, but I'd be worried about the weather. Also, I think it would be a lot of work for you on your own bday. What about reserving a room at a fun bar/lounge and doing a Luau theme? At least then you wouldn't have to worry about weather, set-up/clean-up, etc.
BTW... congrats on your girl!

That sounds awesome! I agree about the pig. There are definitely places that will deliver them fully cooked. How fun!

I think it's a great idea...sans the pig! lol I'm not a vegetarian or anything, but I don't know if I'd want to see a whole pig during a party...staring right back at me the whole time. LOL But a luau does sound like a lot of fun...
the funny thing is I AM a vegetarian - but a pig in the ground is such a luau thing!
I agree this is an awful lot of work for you on your own birthday, and especially as you are expecting. It might be more fun to be able to go somewhere, where at the end of the night, you can just leave without any responsibility.
I am used to being a crazy planner for my own birthday ;-) Last year I organized a murder mystery party, where I had to coordinate clues for 15 guests throughout the night. It was a ridiculous amount of work but so much fun. My parents always come and my mom is a great help with food and clean up so I'm not worried about that stuff. Hubby's good at it too!
Oh well that is good then! Glad you enjoy it
In that case, the party sounds like a lot of fun, but seeing as you are vegetarian, maybe think about how many people would actually eat the pig... I think a pig roasting in the ground would feed an awful lot of people... and personally, as a pp said, even though I eat pork occasionally, I would be uncomfortable with any animal staring at me the whole time, and probably would not eat it... but that's just me!
I think it sounds fantastic! Just be prepared to be ok with having to move the party inside if the weather isn't cooperating.
And as for the pig, it was actually pretty common to have a whole roasted pig for New Year's celebration in Russia.
