Color Question (aka save my sanity)

Hi gals-

Quick follow up... So we went to see that perfect apartment on Monday, and, as expected, it was sublime. So sublime in fact, that four hours after viewing it, we called our broker to talk about placing a bid. Well, an hour after we left, the seller accepted an all-cash offer at full asking price (something we could not compete with), and the apartment was gone. That is NYC real estate for you. I'm totally bummed and desperately trying to distract myself.

So it is back to fixing/decorating the current place, hopefully in prep for putting it on the market. And I'm stuck. The kitchen space is small and the whole backsplash is tiled, but there is some wall space that is just a drab cream paint right now. I've decided to DIY a spice rack by magnetizing one wall and affixing these containers to the wall...

spices

kitchen 1

dark cherry cabinets, light cream tile floors

kitchen 2

kitchen 3

wall to be magnetized for spice rack

kitchen 4

Tile backsplash

kitchen 5

countertops

The magnetic paint is just a primer, so I really have to pick a color for the walls to finally finish the kitchen. Any thoughts you D&R gurus? I want to do something interesting, but I have to make the space seem as big as possible.

Re: Color Question (aka save my sanity)

  • Sorry you lost the apartment Sad

Rather than using magnetized paint, why don't you just get a small piece of metal to hang on the wall right there?   Then use magnetized spice containers to stick to the metal.

  • I think since its such a small amount of wall space I would pull that grey-beige color out of the tile and use that.  It will still contrast with the light tile/floor but also ties into the countertops and isnt too dark along with the cabinents.  I love the magnetized spice rack idea.
  • Does the cabinet door swing into the wall?  I agree with the metal strip as well.  Might work a little easier.  I have one that I keep certain knives on.  Cool idea though.

I would go with a tan color.

  • I think a tan color would be great. I like SW Oaken Barrel, but it might be a tad too dark for that. Maybe something from the same strip though. I think instead of doing a whole magnetic wall, I would go with a couple strips. That way you can bring more of the wall color into that space.

  • Sorry about the apartment Ro!

I love your backsplash! I think a small navy blue accent wall (spice rack wall) would look fantastic, but probably wouldn't make the space look bigger. It would jive nicely with the other rooms though right? I think that would be such a rich, unexpected touch.

My mom had a deep navy blue accent wall in our living room, it contrasted so well with the orange Spanish tile--it was really beautiful and clean and regal looking.
