Hi
I just wanted to stop by and get some info. My husband and I are currently living in a small town in Wisconsin. Right now we're discussing moving - simply for something new while we still don't have a lot tying us down.
North Carolina has been one of the main contenders in our moving discussions. So I just thought I'd stop by to see what some NC nesties have to say about their home state. Favorite towns and cities, great things about the state, etc.
We need all the help we can get right now so any info would be very much appreciate!
Re: Possibly Moving to NC?
I'm a NC native, and there are many great things about this state. The weather is nice and there are beautiful mountains AND beautiful beaches in the same state.
I'm not sure what the COL is like in comparison to WI.
Like everyone else, the job market is tight in NC right now. I grew up in the Winston-Salem area but I live on the coast (Wilmington) and the job market is tight here even when the economy is good.
Do you have any specific questions?
I agree that one of you should have a job before moving. I am not a native, but I went to grad school here, went away for a few years and then moved here with DH so he could go to grad school. We hope to stay in NC once he is done with school.
I have lived in a lot of places (PA, VA, MD, OH and NC). I think NC has the best weather, but it depends on what you like. I do not really like the cold or too much snow. The COL is also much cheaper compared to the DC metro area. Traffic is also better than the DC metro area. I currently live in the Triad and we can easily get to the mountains or the beach. The are a decent amount of events locally and the Triangle and Charlotte are not too far away.
My husband's job actually allows him to work from home if he wanted to. So as far as that goes, he'd have his job. I currently am doing school full time and I do that online. For that we are definitely covered, at least until I graduate and have to start looking for something full time.
Right now we're just doing our research and trying to figure out a good spot for us. We're both just so sick of the snow and cold around here and we want something new. We figure might as well do it now while we have relatively no ties. And if we hate it we can always come back.
i grew up in sheboygan county, and i'd say COL is pretty much the same. my parents still live in WI and we'll compare prices every once and awhile, and things are pretty much the same. i'm in the charlotte area here.
we're actually looking at leaving NC though, like you, we want something new. NC has been a great place to live, but we're ready to move on.
I think you'd do best to take some time and come visit. If I didn't have to find a job and could live anywhere in NC I'd probably pick Wilmington or Asheville. But Raleigh, Charlotte, & Greensboro have more career prospects than those areas and more of a city feel. Charlotte's industry is centered around banking whereas Raleigh is more technology oriented. Our main reason for choosing Raleigh is that it's a pretty easy weekend drive to the DC area where we're from. Like Elissa said, I feel it has enough of the big city conveniences w/out the big city hassles. I love all the parks & greenway trails that are available, it makes it very easy to enjoy the outdoors.
Agree with this 1,000,000%. I'd definitely do Wilmington if me or DH worked from home. Charlotte is great but we are mainly here because that's where we work. If both of us worked from home, we'd go somewhere less populated and more scenic.
If you don't have to worry about a job, Wilmington is great. The COL is a little higher, but mainly due to housing costs. Otherwise it's similar to Raleigh or Charlotte.
It does have a "small town" feel though, kind of like everybody knows somebody who knows you. I do wish we had more to do here - concerts, sports, better shopping and restaurants. It takes a little over an hour to get to Myrtle Beach (which I don't like anyway) and about 2 hours to get to the heart of Raleigh.
It would be worth a visit to see if you would like to live here. Being near the beach is nice, of course, but I actually think the best part of Wilmington is the Historic Downtown area on the river.
Eek! You would love it. Well, if you're anything like me! I was born in Chicago and visit often with our family in Illinois and Wisconsin. I also lived in PA but have been in the Raleigh area since 1990. It's magnificent! I went to school in Charlotte and have decided after a total of 6 years in Charlotte that I love Raleigh just a little bit more. Wilmington's nice and so is Boone but they're college towns in my mind. NC cities like Charlotte, Wilmington, Asheville and Raleigh all are big on the outdoors and community activities! Raleigh-to me- is more family oriented and established. Charlotte is the up-and-coming workaholic/playaholic city and Wilmington is a great place to vacation for a week. Asheville is great to visit too. I have nothing bad to say about the cities but I sure love Raleigh. Anywhere you go in NC it will be easy to connect with others and find ways to keep busy and involved! I say, "go for it!"
