Biggs

Anyone know anything about Remke Market buying a couple of Biggs stores and more of them closing?

Re: Biggs

  • This was in supermarket news today a little more indepth than Cincinnati.com (on the business end). Here is what I am getting - Supervalu is a major chain that owns Biggs. They decided to sell this part of the business (happens quite a bit in the grocery business with larger chains and small market stores). They are also selling a lot of smaller market stores in the west. Remke is looking for ways to venture into Ohio and increase competition so they purchased the Biggs stores. (had one store in Ohio previously, but now has closed.)  They are keeping some locations, but it looks as if they are closing. Remke only purchased 5 locations and the others are being closed by Supervalu. I will be interested to see how they plan to keep the branding in the store -- Biggs brands and remke brands obviously will change, but hopefully the rest of the selections wont. Most of the time with takeovers, they will wait a few months (money is always tight at that time) and then work to rebrand. I guess they are keeping the fuel perks for now as well.
  • FI and I both have family members that work for Bigg's.  The employees have no guarentee for their jobs, they will have to re-apply and interview for their jobs back. :-(

  • The only store that I am familiar with that is closing is the Harrison store. I am assuming that it being a hyper market is part of the reason that it is closing. I guess the new kroger marketplace is going to be making a killing now that it is the only grocery store in the area.
