Hi ladies,
I am a little confused, as I have never heard of these baskets everyone is suddenly talking about..
What are easter baskets???
?
Re: Easter baskets??
Easter baskets are for collecting Easter eggs, which are commonly left in your backyard or around your house, which are laid by the Easter bunny. Makes total sense, right?
The Easter egg/bunny stuff is kinda like Santa Claus. It has some kind of mythical/pagan/historical basis, but nowadays it just represents the secular, commercial side of the holiday, and usually provides the "fun" part of the holiday. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about the origins of the Easter basket: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_basket
eta: thank link describes the Easter egg apparently, but it's still kinda interesting.
^ This along with something to gather eggs in, but mostly this. I wonder if it's an American thing or not, never gave it any thought.
Yep. My mom used to hide mine in the house.
Not strictly American at all!
It's rooted largely in Christianity which may explain why you aren't aware. Did M get one growing up? Or, were his parents old school Italian- focusing purely on the religious aspect of Easter?
M didn't know what those were.
He's raised by no nonsense Italian's that are what I call (and they call) bad Catholics.
So as you can imagine, no one's focusing on anything other then food in his household
