Rec your appliances

Inspired by all your washer issues!

We'll probably have to buy a fridge, washer and dryer.  Maybe a stove/oven and microwave.

Any recs?

Any issues with stainless or front-loading, etc.  All I know is that J wants a washer without an agitator pole, like his mom's, because there is less damage to the items.

Re: Rec your appliances

  • My only recommendation is to price shop.  It seems like appliances are WAY overpriced these days.

  • We have all Kenmore appliances in our condo.  We've been here 3.5 years, and I think the appliances are all around 7 years old.  We've had zero problems with them (aside from this washing machine business), so all in all I'd recommend the brand.

My Mom has a Frigidaire (sp?) front-load washing machine that she just bought 2 years ago and loves.  She was able to get a good deal on it.  Frigidaire is made by Electrolux.

I'd definitely price shop because it does seem like appliances are pricey these days.  But, I have also seen some good deals.

Have you checked a source like Consumer Reports?  That's usually the first place I go when making a big or $$ purchase.

ETA- sorry, forgot all about front-loads...  Ours is a front-load, and the tips/considerations I have are: (1) you will probably have to do smaller loads than what you may do in a top-load, (2) it's recommended to get front-load HE detergent (regular detergent can gunk up the machines), and that may be more expensive, but I find a bottle lasts a long time because you don't need to use a lot, (3) after you've finished your wash, clean the inner rubber rim with a paper towel (and even vinegar) to get rid of gunk/extra water, and leave the door ajar for a few hours (might be a concern if S or G are walking around/have access to the laundry area), (4) every week or two I run an empty cycle with hot water and vinegar to combat mold, there are also products on the market for this but I haven't tried any, (5) I've read the life-cycle of front-loads is shorter than top-loads due to the spinning mechanism, and they're more expensive at the outset

  • I love my front loader, but get the pedestal for it b/c mine is so low to the ground for loading (esp. now that I am pregnant).  The only issue with it is that I have to remember to keep the door cracked because water gets trappen in the seal of the door and it smells mildew-y (this is common with front loaders- my parents have the same problem).

Our appliances came with the house, so I didn't pick them out, I'm not much help.  My dream fridge is one of those with the french doors on top and the freezer on the bottom.

  • When DH & I moved into our house about 2 years ago we had to buy a new fridge, washer & dryer and we have GE for all three.  Mainly because we both work for a company that has a GE discount, but what worked for us was buying the closeout models.  They were much cheaper than the current models and they weren't that different.  We got our washer/dryer combo for a little under $1100 and they're black front loaders. Our fridge is a french door and I fought long and hard to get a french door as opposed to a side by side cause I just don't get those. There's no room.

So my advice is, check and see if your company (or your parents) has a discount program through a major appliance carrier. Then look for the closeout models (can also be applied when looking in Best Buy/Sears etc), and buy the extended warranty! Good luck!

ETA: I tried looking into consumer reports and reviews online and determined that buying appliances is a crap shoot.  It's not worth working yourself up about it.  Just get the extended warranty.

  • We bought a Kenmore washer & dryer when we moved into our current house.  The space where they are hooked up is limited by a railing which we can't remove because we're renting, so the larger front loading units wouldn't fit.  We have pretty basic models, but have been very happy with them.  We got them on sale at Sears.

  • I have nothing to chime in on as far as brands go but watch out for toddlers (and husbands) with stainless.  Unless you want to be wiping down your fridge every single day of life, you may want to think about that.  Of course, if you dont care about smudges and fingerprints then its no biggie.  I had them in my house in florida and loved the look of them right after they were cleaned but other than that, I would have much rather had something that was easier to maintain.

Also, as far as prices go...we have a scratch and dent place here that sells appliances with minor dings in them (with warranty) and sometimes even places like lowes, home depot etc. will sell them at a much discounted price.  If the scratch or dent isn't visable, it is well worth the 500 or more off.

  • Washing machines... front vs. top.

Top w/out aggitator---they're fairly $$  And they don't get the clothes as clean as a top with the aggitator.  They will also twist your clothing more...  The top loader w/out agg-you will need the HE detergent for that.  The appliance guy said he'd rather sell me a top w agg before one without.

I just purchased a basic Maytag front loader.  I'm lovin' it. DH may make a pedestal base for it-which is allowed as long as it is LEVEL...(vs. spending the $200 plus for the pedestal.  I do find my clothes are twisted together moreso, but I know they're getting washed better, I got two rebates for the unit-one from my electrical company (check into that, too)... I've always heard Maytag is good for washers... I also heard LG & Kenmore were, too.

As for regular appliances,  my customers like Sears-Kenmore units.  I think it just depends on your needs and space.  For refrig-please measure your space...(**height is usually forgotten about***)  make sure the unit is easy to move/pull out if you can't open your crisper drawers... For dishwashers-you spend $ on sound proofing as well as more selections-so don't get a basic model.  For ranges... space, cleanability, appearance-I love the look of a slide in range, but the controls are in the front... you might have to childproof that in the near future.

(ok, gotta get back to my stuff...) GL and let me know if you have any other questions...

  • forgot... microwave... one w a convection oven is pretty neat if you use it a lot!
  • I hear Electrolux products are poorly made (from a friend who worked at the assembly facility as an engineer) so steer clear.
  • We are in desperate need of a fridge but need to put that off for a bit.

We bought front loader washer and dryer about a year and a half ago from Sears Outlet, it is just the discontinued models for really cheap.  We bought the extended warrienties on both and needed it for the washer the begining of March.  Totally my fault for overloading the washer but it stopped spinning, we called the 1-800 number they were out next day, on time,  fixed the problem in half an hour with no charge.  And since it failed within warrenity they gave us a $10 gift card to sears.

We also got our dishwasher and microwave at the same place and with the deals got the warrienties for free.  Have had nothing but good things to say about them.

Oh all appliances were Kennmore expect the dishwasher it is a bosh.
