just home from gyno...

I just got back from my annual pap, and I also set up my appt. to get paragard IUD.

Something that I hadn't heard of before and that my doctor gave me a prescription for--Cytotec? She said that because I haven't had kids yet it can hurt really bad to have paragard inserted, so she recommends this drug to soften the cervix the night before I go in for my appt. Has anyone done this?  As far as I'm concerned, awesome if there is something that will make it less painful! I was just planning on Motrin, but she said that combine this with Motrin and I'll be good to go.

Opinions?

Re: just home from gyno...

  • That sounds awesome. Glad I know about it. I haven't had kids either and my doctor refuses to do an IUD because of that.

you are brave, the thought of anything being inside me(well besides the obvious things) makes me squemish!! Good luck hope it doesn't cause you too much pain:)
  • I haven't had it done, but it's a pretty common practice.  You'll still feel a bit crampy (the Cytotec will probably make you feel crampy too), but it shouldn't be much worse than a period.

  • When I was considering the IUD, my doc was also going to prescribe this. It just dialates you to make insertion easier! GL!
  • Hi!

Was browsing and saw this post. I was told that it may take up to 5 years for you to get pregnant if you use the IUD.

Only if the IUD is still inside you  Confused.  Once it's removed, you can get pregnant immediately.

    Hi!

You do know it's a form of birth control, right?  And they can last for 5-10 years?  But once it's out, and you can have it removed any time you want, it doesn't affect your ability to get pregnant.

Check your facts.  I don't know who told you that, but they were wrong.

  • The paragard is the worse thing that I have ever done. I only kept it for 6 months because I would have contractions every month for 2 weeks. It was my bodies way to try to get rid of it. I had it removed 2 years ago. Insertion is not really that bad. It is uncomfortable and you will cramp some, but not bad. I was at the gyno last month and someone was having to go into emergency surgery because her iud had got stuck in the wrong place. I have been hearing more and more people say that has happened to them. We now use condoms as our form of birth control.

  • Yuk. I had an h scope and the doc had to manually dilate my cervix. It was not fun and yeah, it was crampy and how. So should the cytotec be.
  • I had a Mirena IUD put in about two years ago.  I have not had kids and I didn't get anything to dilate my cervix beforehand (I believe I took two Advils).  It really wasn't that bad - it just felt like a cramp.  Not a big deal.

Though, the doctor that put it in was really experienced with inserting IUDs and I think that's what made my experience really easy.

    Good luck!

  • Hey girl!! I remember you posted on my post a week ago about the IUD.. Well, I got mine in last Wednesday and let me tell you it was not  a very comfortable situation in my case. This is kind of graphic but trust me I would have liked to know before hand what I was getting into lol.

I went to Planned Parenthood to get mine done. They didnt give me to take the night before, but they said that the would give me 800 MG of ibuprofen the day of. So I went in and had a little consult again making sure that I wanted the Mirena and going over the stuff we went over the day before, and then came the insurtion.. They way that my doc described it was that I would feel three really bad cramps.. The put the spectrum in like u have for your annual pap. Then she said this was going to be the first one.. She put this measuring "stick" in to make sure that it was going to fit. Since I hadn't had kids this did hurt.. It felt like A lot of pressure. Then she put this other spectrum that she said would be the most painful because it keeps your cervix open a bit so she could put the IUD in properly.. That Hurt.. lol not gonna lie.. But after it was done I was okay. I did have cramping that day and feel a bit out of sorts, but the next day I was fine. I do recommend having some ibuprofen in case the cramps are bothersome for you. Also, Eat the morning of because that will help you as well. I hope it works out for you. I have mine in and I don't feel any different. I occasionally have a cramp or two but nothing that interrupts my life. I'm sure you'll do great! Post on how it went afterward and, Hope you feel great afterward!! =)

  • Thanks for the info!! Nothing is too graphic, don't worry! I appreciate all the details so that I know what I'm getting myself into ;) Our planned parenthood here only offers Paragard--no Mirena because I guess they were too expensive to order? Who knows.
  • That's strange... I thought all of them offered both.. Well, remember I was going to go with the Paragard because of the hormones.. However after speaking with the doc at PP they said that it's so little that it won't make me crazy like the Nuva ring did. So, I ended up going with that. Oh and also because I read that the Paragard also make you have like seriously bad cramps and u end up bleeding a lot more during your periods. So, I went with Mirena because I thought it was what was best for me. I hope it goes well for you and that you don't have too much pain. It sounds like u won't if they gave you something to take before you go there. Good Luck!! =) When's your appointment btw?
  • I work in Labor/Delivery and we give cytotec all the time to patients to begin the induction process because it helps soften the cervix. I've never worked in an OB/GYN office so I didn't even know they used it for this, but it seems like a really great idea to minimize discomfort. I would think it would definitely help.

  • cytotec was the most painful experience of my entire life.  my husband had to call the dr's office more than once cause he thought he was going to have to take me to the hospital before i even made it to my insertion appointment.

hope it went better for you.
