Re: The Depo shot?

  • I had it yrs ago, hated it. Weird periods, crazy emotional foolishness  I hate all bc to be honest and have not been on them in yrs.

  • I did for 2-3 years, almost 10 years ago. I liked that I only had to think about bc once every 3 months and I liked that my periods stopped completely. It's a very high dose of hormones, though, so if your body is sensitive to hormones it's probably a bad idea. A possible side effect is a loss of bone density, so I believe you're not supposed to take it for too many years without going off. Personally I didn't experience any side effects, other than having irregular periods when I stopped taking it.
  • I had it about 10 years ago and didn't do well with it.  After about 6 months with no AF I bled for about 3 months straight and was in such pain I ended up in the hospital.  Everyone's body is different but I'd never recommend it.

  • I did it one shot never again, I was locking myself in the closet crying uncontrollably, bad mood swings. As soon as the shot wore off I was fine, I thought I was going to die or go crazy.

  • I was on it for about a year a few years ago. Honestly, now that I'm going to be needing bc again, this seems like the best option for me. I am bad at taking pills consistently, so pills aren't the option for me. When I was using the depo as birth control, my period stopped completely (not complaining there) when I went off it, my period resumed normally. I didn't have any side effects except that I think I gained some weight from it, that's one reason I went off of it. I heard from a friend that you shouldn't be on it LT, so that was the other reason I went off of it.
  • There is a warning for Depo saying that it can decrease the calcium in your bones, thus increasing your risk for osteoporosis.  The longer you use it, the higher your risk.  It goes on to say that you should not use this medication for more than two years unless there is no other form of contraception you can use.  It is also recommended that you make sure to eat foods rich in calcium and vitamin D while on this medication.

  • I am on it and have been on it for 9 months. I love it! The only problem I having with it is the weight gain. I am a bit overweight as it is and don't need any help. I have loved not worrying about BC for three months at a time, no periods (for me), and no nausea (I was always sick on the pill). Having said all of this I haven't been on it very long so take my experience with a grain of salt.
  • I didn't get excessively emotional or anything but after the first few weeks I kept spotting continuously. got very annoying.
  • I was on it for years a while back. I loved it! My periods stopped completely and I loved that I only had to think about BC every 3 months. The only side effect I had to deal with was the fact that I gained a bit of weight each year while on it, and the depo made it very hard to lose it. Once I went off it to TTC, the weight came right off. And, if you do decide to TTC, once you have the baby you can get right back on the Depo at your 6 week appt. (this applied when I had DD, 10 years ago. It may have changed since then.)

  • I've been on Depo for the last year and I love it.  I did not gain weight or have any crazy emotional mood swings or anything like that.  I absolutely love only having to go in for a shot every 12 weeks and not worrying about antibiotics or other things interfering with my BC.  I'm going off of the shot next month and I'll be starting BCP because DH and I are starting to talk about conceiving and I want to make sure I'm ovulating and all that jazz before we decide that we want to get pregnant.

  • I started the Depo shot in Oct 04 and at first I thought it was a great option for me. I didnt have to remember to take a pill every day, and I just had to get the nerves to get the shot every 3 months. However, I started noticing that my moods were always changing.. High - low and then I'd lash out at my then BF ( now Hubby) for no reason.. I also had a HUGE weight gain. I was a bit heavy then.. Size 12-13 but then about a year later the weight had gotten out of control. i was working out all the time and eating right and I was still gaining weight. By the time I got off of the Depo shot I was a size 18-20 and I felt horrible. I stopped it and, I've been trying to loose the weight ever since. It was not a good experience for me at all. I liked not having a period and, not having to use Condoms but honestly that wasn't worth the weight gain and the mood swings. I hope that it works better for you if you choose that method. Good luck! =)
  • i ahve only been on the depo shot for about a month. i have no side affects so far. but breasts are slightly swollen, but no complaining there. ive heard that long time use is not smart, which is why im going off of it after a year. everyone's bodies are different and react in diff ways.
  • I got on it in fall of '99 and went off of it summer of '03. I swear it gave me the worst depression, mood swings, I was near suicidal at some points. Unexplained crying bouts, etc. I think I spotted for the first several months while on it. Then my periods stopped until I went off of it (and when they returned, they did so with a vengeance, soooo heavy and horrible, I was convinced I was going to become anemic). I lost a bit of weight when i went on it but after I got off of it, I gained FIFTY lbs, which took me a year to lose. Oh and I had horrible random charlie horse cramps in my calves, esp at night, they would wake me up. Finally, I got this little brown spot about the size of a pencil eraser that developed on my cheek, derm said it was a melasma spot from the BC. :-/   I am on Nuvaring now (since July 09) and like it much more.
  • I was on depo for 7 years, I liked it at the time (except the weight gain and mood swings). But now that we are ttc going on 8 months I wish I never was on it.
  • Was on it for 3 years throughout college, loved that I had no periods after a little while. But it came with incredible mood swings, I'd flip out for no reason. Once I got off of it my mood got better!
