So I know that you were tossing around the idea of moving to Georgia (among other places)... and a friend of mine just took the exam for her teachers certification, and there were 2000 people taking the exam! There are four schools in our county closing because our school system is in major debt (to the tune of 100 million) and the schools are on a hiring freeze for the most part...

I know the situation for teachers is bad in FL as well... just don't know how well they compared. I just wanted to give you a heads up if you were still contemplating making the move.

Re: foto

  • Thx for letting me know, seems like GA is just as bad as FL. My district laid off about 500 teachers 2 yrs ago...well they have a new law that limits class sizes to 18, so now they are hiring back a lot of teachers for the upcoming school year to comply with the law of smaller class sizes. I am trying everything I can to get a job. I've emailed sooo many principals asking if I can come and talk with them and drop off my resume. Most of them tell me they don't have time to talk to me but I can drop my resume off. It's really frustrating. :(  I am competing with soooo many people. I feel like I have no chance.

My DH is also having a lot of stress with his job. He works in a grocery store and has for 10 yrs. He is management and gets paid well, has great benefits, but its not what he wanted to do with his life. He works 16 hr days and has soooo much stress on him, and also has started having back problems from the strenuous work. He wishes he could quit and go to school, but he basically supports me since I cant find a job and he feels trapped in the job. I just hate FL because I am by myself here with no family, I wish sometimes I could just move, get a teaching job and support him and let him go to college for computers (like he has always wanted to do) but there are no teaching jobs!! I feel so stuck :(

  • I'm really sorry about your situation. I understand what it's like to have no family or close friends nearby, and that always makes it harder. Have you tried looking into private schools? I think those are the only ones that are doing any real hiring around here... there is a staffing agency for private schools, Carney Sandoe, where they will do a search in whatever regions of the country you are interested in, and they will send your resume, references, etc out to those schools. I'm not sure if it will give you any results, but at least it's a different angle to try. Oh! And actually, there is another one... www.sais.org. This one is just for teaching positions in the southeast.

About your DH's job situation, would you guys be willing to take on student loans? I know debt is a PITA, but sometimes with stuff like going back to school, there really is no good time. And usually through school he would get health insurance, etc. It might be interesting to look into where he would want to go to school and see if there are any teaching positions in that area.... I'm sure more rural areas have more positions... even if that's not where you want to be forever, it might be worth looking.

  • Don't mean to butt in to your conversation but I was just wondering what part of georgia you'd like to move to?

There's a regional State Farm office in Duluth and I think a smaller office nearby.  If your H would be willing to check their job site once in a while he might find something he could live with.  If he works there for a year then they will pay for him to go to school part time.  He can take as many classes as he wants and as long as he gets a C or higher they pay for them.  They have good benefits too in case you don't find something right away.

He could do that for a few years, get the degree he wants and then either move up in the company or leave and go somewhere else.

  • Thanks dv I will check out those sights! I wouldn't mind working in a private school. At this point, I will take ANYTHING!! :)

Duluth is actually near where we would want to live. We want to live in North GA above Atlanta. It is about 2 hrs away from my mom in Alabama. I wonder if the school thing applies for all state farm agencies? At his current job, they also offer free tuition as long as you get a job related to your field. The degree he wants is related to his field so it works out. The only thing is, he works from 5:30 AM to 7:30 PM so there's no time for school. It's kinda stupid how they offer it, knowing you can't possibly do it anyway.

The debt thing is a concern because right now, we are almost completely out of debt and we are trying so hard to get it paid down. It should be paid off in about 6 months. I told him that once the debt is paid off, we can put all our extra income into savings and then once we have a pretty good cushion, we can talk about moving and maybe him quitting and going to school. He is still worried though, all the time invested in his current job has him second guessing quitting. He just loves the benefits, bonuses, 4 weeks of vacation, etc. and it's hard for him to just quit all that and start new. Kinda scary..

  • That office isn't actually an agency.  The agents don't work in that building but he'd probably be working with them at least a little no matter what he did there.  But yes, the education stuff applies to every State Farm Employee.  You can study any subject you want. There are only a few jobs that have longer hours, most employees work 8:00 - 4:15 or something similar.  Some claims people have 1 long day a week or 1 weekend day every once in a while.

They also have tests you can take within state farm (with study material) relating to insurance that help you move up in the company if you choose to.  He'd probably have no interest in that if he wants to work with computers but it's an option.

  • Wow that really sounds great! The hours too! I will tell him about it. Every state farm place I go in seems so stress-free. The one I use here has a dog in the office with them everyday. He needs a job like that :)

  • It is a good place to work.  He wouldn't be in a small, cozy office like that though unless he works for a specific agent.  If he works in the Regional office it's probably a pretty large office building.  He'd have a cubicle with his coworkers around him.  I don't think any job is stress-free but he might like it better than what he has now.  It's a good option if you just want to be taken care of while you get things straight.

There are no openings there at the moment but if he's really interested tell him to check at least once a week.  Listings don't stay up long and they're filled fast.  Here's a direct link to the job postings site: https://online2.statefarm.com/apps/careers/psc/cgprdext/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/HRS_HRAM.HRS_CE.GBL?Page=HRS_CE_HM_PRE&Action=A

  • Foto, does FL have voc rehab eduation assistance?  Maybe your H's doctor will write him a letter or complete paperwork to get the process started.  I know someone here in IN that used it--it paid for his ed and living expenses until he graduated.

I looked it up and they do, but it seems like it's only for people with disabilities and I don't think that he would qualify.
