people w/nut allergies, or anyone with an opinion

Warning: Some of this might be TMI and it's long, sorry.

I've never had a problem eating any kind of nut, but last Friday I got some cocoa roasted almonds (the kind that someone here recommended) and I ate some as a snack, then had lunch and shortly after I got some really awful stomach cramps.

I had been kind of extra gassy (only at night) the two days prior so I thought maybe I'd picked up a bug and it had finally made itself known.

My stomach hurt all night and I didn't eat dinner b/c of the pain, but I never got sick or went to the bathroom. I think I would have felt better if I could have done either of those things, but it never happened.

The next morning I woke up and felt fine so I didn't think anything else about it until that afternoon when I ate some more almonds as a snack and immediately the pain came back.

I thought it must be something about the almonds so I haven't eaten any more, but every day since then I get the cramps after almost every meal. The only thing that I eat that doesn't really upset my stomach is yogurt.

They are painful in varying degrees and last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. I keep thinking I'm going to be sick or have to go to the bathroom, but nothing ever happens. Except once on Monday afternoon I had to run to the bathroom three times in about twenty minutes, but that's it. I've been trying to watch what I eat and only eat mild foods, but it doesn't really seem to matter.

So I'm wondering if nuts can mess up your stomach for that long or if it's something else entirely.

I have a Dr's appointment next week and I'd like to hold off until then to see a dr. Actually I'd like it to go away, but I'm not sure at this point what the problem is. I've googled, but mostly I just get a long list of serious illnesses that make me paranoid.

Thoughts? (I'm not pregnant)

Re: people w/nut allergies, or anyone with an opinion

  • I'm glad to hear you are going to a doctor.  I don't think the almonds should still be causing issues days after you ate them.  But they definitely could have something in them that doesn't agree with your body.  But that is just my guess!  I hope you start feeling better soon!

I love the "I'm not pregnant" disclaimer at the end.  That is what I was thinking as I read through your post!

  • I have nut allergies, but they really only affect my throat.  I have never had them affect my stomach...
  • Nuts have a lot of fat (usually the "good" fat) and protein in them.  Your body may not be used to those fats or protein--even the "good" kinds.  I know my gastro used to recommend that I actually up my nut eating whenever I was experience belly pain because, for most people, it's sort of a natural diuretic.  There are definitely some foods that I eat that will make me feel icky for a few days until all of it leaves my system too--I'm just glad you were able to somewhat easily identify your food of pain.  Good luck!  I hope your Dr. has a better answer for you!
  • I don't have much to tell you, but just wanted to say I'm sorry you're feeling poorly and I hope you feel better soon. DH has IBS and it can take him several days to feel better if something has disagreed with his stomach. Like he felt really sick on Saturday night and I know he still wasn't feeling right yesterday (I haven't asked today). He usually just eats really mild foods (plain pasta) while waiting it out.
  • Thanks y'all. I'm beginning to think it is definitely the nuts. Now I just have to figure out if it's all almonds or only that particular brand. I ate some a couple weeks ago and had not problems, but they were packaged by a different company.

What really blows is that my birthday is on Saturday and I'm supposed to eat out a couple of times with different people to celebrate. I want to celebrate my birthday, but I don't want to get sick b/c of it. Poor me. Crying

  • Have you checked for recalls on that product? Maybe there is something wrong with that specific batch.

I hope you feel better soon.

  • I hadn't thought of that Curbside. I'll look into it.

I had dinner tonight with minimal pain. Progress!

  • Glad you're getting checked out.  My boss had something about 2 years ago that started out kind of like what you described and then one day, he felt like he was having issues with his appendix.  It turned out to be diverticulosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diverticulosis), which can be aggravated by nuts and seeds.  Not saying that's what you have, but it wouldn't hurt to be on the lookout for it.
