I saw the wondering post below-and it did get me wondering but what i started wondering about it how a group of teenagers behaved so dreadfully, in such a mean spirited way that it led to a 15 year old girl committing suicide. And while wondering about this, I also was wondering why the school officials who had been notified of this behaviour numerous times did not take action.
My worry is that we are in for a long spell of disgraceful behaviour from our youth if examples are not put in place from the top down, as indicated by the recent behaviour in congress during the health care vote (btw this is not meant as a pro or con on the health care bill) when did it become okay for our elected "adult" officials to hurl racial and homophobic slurs at each other? For sarah pallin to implicitly suggest violence saying we must "reload" and have crosshairs on different districts of the map on her web site.
Thoughts? Sorry for being so serious-just my mood today
Re: wondering on a more serious matter little long
I saw this story on the Today Show this morning and wondered the same thing. I even said to DH, "what is wrong with kids these days?".
I completely agree with you. I feel that as a society, we have become more rude and much less respectful. I am genuinely surprised by the lack of empathy humans in general can sometimes have for one another.
This recent story is tragic, but far from the only one which makes it all so much more tragic. Just before this story broke, I heard another one about a girl being beaten so badly over an argument via text messages & she was apparently from the same school in Florida as that boy who was set on fire over a video game. And while I do think, "man what is wrong with the kids these days?", I also am baffled by some adults...remember that teenage girl that killed herself over a "boy" on myspace that was really her classmate's MOM!! What adult would ever pretend to be a teenage boy to harrass one of their kid's classmates??
And as for the disrespect in politics, it is so shameful for many reasons, but particularly b/c they are supposed to be our "leaders" & if they can't treat each other with respect what does that say for all of us.

hi hi hi
it's not only politicians though. it's also music. it's media. it's the hollywood diva culture.
don't get me wrong, i love music and media. i used to be a teenager who listened to songs for the beat only, not the lyrics. now as an adult, i hear the lyrics and i'm disgusted. i also used to be a single girl back in her 20s who wanted to get in for free everywhere and have her drinks paid for and blah blah blah. and it was fun at the time. but now i'm like, i can buy my own drinks thank you very much.
i'm very bothered by the sense of entitlement that our kids have these days. which can also be traced to parents and such. because as parents, we have struggled, and it's awesome that we want the best for our kids and we don't want them to struggle. but i think some parents are too busy being their kids "friends" and makig them feel special that they don't set boundaries for appropriate levels of behavior.
i mean how many times have we seen kids wailing their heads out at the grocery store and their parents automatically succumb and give them what they want? or kids say a bad word and the parents laugh and think it's cute because the kid doesn't know what the word means?
i'm even bothered by people's quoting the "don't judge others" or saying everything is all relative. or the American Idol culture: "i don't care if you didn't like my singing. i think i did my best and i think that's good enough."
it bugs me because you know what? there are moral rules and levels of respect that we should follow. just because it feels right to me that i should bully someone doesn't make it right. there are lines to be drawn.
sorry if i'm rambling. i have very strong opinions about this. hahahah and i'm at work.

Man, I just had this discussion with my neighbor. We have some unruly kids on our street that think its ok to pee in our front yards. I'm trying to grow my grass and this isn't helping. I'm gearing up for some confrontation with the parental units.
On a similar note, I volunteer on a diversion board that "diverts" youth from making further mistakes. They've usually committed a misdemeanor or a small felony (small in the courts eyes) and we try to get to the bottom of their behavior and correct it. Sadly, 99% of my cases are kids that are from a really messed home. This 12 yr old last week called his teacher the C word amongst other horrible terms to call a woman, then threw a chair at her. I asked him where he hears these words mostly and he said his parents. And really all I wanted to do for this kid was shake the mother and hug the kid. She was awful. I NEVER saw this behavior growing up. I had bad kids in my classes but nothing like that.
These "adults" we call politicians in our country should be ashamed of themselves. No matter how you stand on the health care subject, horrible, mean behavior shouldn't be tolerated.
