Engagement Pics Advice!

Alright ladies, I know you can help with this!

I have been asked to do some engagement shoots recently and I'm considering it.  However, if I do it I want to really do a great job.  I need your input!

What did you like most/least about your engagement portraits?

Is there something you wish you had tried that you didn't?

What did you wear?  Were you happy with this?

Did your photographer do anything particular that made you relax for your shoot?

What were some of your favorite poses?  (Or, were there poses you wish you had done but didn't?)

Any suggestions?

Re: Engagement Pics Advice!

  • Our engagment picture(yes just 1) was in front of DH's Gran's beige draps. BLAH! Takin' by DH's uncle who was rushed throught us to get to BIL for his Senior Pictures(where he got to go to about 3 different places). So my list of "Wanted to do's" is long.

But all I can say it I really missed to color inhancement of other E-pics I've seen. I think that is beautiful!!

  • I really like the ones like Agent's!

Meaningful art in the background.  Sense of humor.

Of course, it depends on the couple and what mood they want to go for.

  • I loved ours but then again we were going for dramatic and moody which is why we chose the cemetary.  We opted for dark clothing with a formal and casual change. She went with our moodiness a little too much and I wish I would have gotten some playful shots.  I love the ones that I have seen recently of a couple doing something they love like playing scrabble in a coffee shop, colorful, artsy, fun etc.

A friend of mine did some recently that were out of this world.  They were taking in a field with a ginormous blanket and they did so much with it.

  • I HATE that we never got them done...

BUT... I love the ones where the people are in comfy clothes and they're by a wall of grafitti or a big red door or some pop of color...  or at an historic area...

  • I love the casual ones we did with our dogs - outside playing with the dogs in jeans!

  • I loved ours!  We had photos done in the Georgetown area of DC, but near a canal.  We wore jeans and nice shirts, I had heels on.  In retrospect I would've preferred to maybe dress up a bit more.  I also would have loved to had more "city" pictures to get in neat architectural designs, stores, artsy things.  Our photographer was great...he just kept everything very relaxed, so it felt like we were just with an old friend.  Some of my favorite pictures were the ones where he used different lighting effects and angles.

I love that she got a lot of shots of us interacting- almost as if she wasn't there.  Some of my faves are of us in front of the fountain and we're leaning in for a kiss and I'm laughing.

Is there something you wish you had tried that you didn't?
I wish we had done something with a clothing change.  Like something with a dress for me, us in jeans.

What did you wear?  Were you happy with this?
We both wore khakis, button down shirts, I wore heeled sandals, he wore dress shoes.  It worked because we were outside, so I was more comfortable getting into different positions b/c I was wearing pants.

Did your photographer do anything particular that made you relax for your shoot?
She took her time, got to know us. Some of the earliest pictures I didn't like at all, but then as the time went on and we got more comfortable, the pictures reflected that.  She encouraged us to be ourselves.  She also told us that we could bring props, like a bouquet of flowers (I didn't find any I liked, so we opted out of that).  One of the things I liked best about her photography is that she is really good at capturing a moment.  (She was our wedding photog as well).  So some of my faves are not really posed but are us laughing, or snuggling, whatever b/c that's what we do.  And when I see those pictures, I can still feel how I felt at that moment.  (Hopefully this all makes sense).  She asked us questions to get to know us during the shoot, too.

    Any suggestions?
I would suggest scheduling at least 2-3 hours, esp. if its with someone you don't really know.  I picked our location.  I didn't want beach pics b/c we're from Florida and we've seen the beach and had our pictures made there a hundred times before.  So we went to a park with a fountain, we were downtown so we found a cute painted alley, we were in front of a neat resataurant with a wrought iron fence and beautiful planters.

  • DH & I just set up a tripod in the woods and took a few of our own! Budget e-pics ha! I wish we had the money to do something cooler.

A friend of mine recently started doing photography and her work is AMAZING. I love her ideas, she's so quirky & cute. Here's her new site: fromagephotography.com

She's got some really good ideas for couple poses that i think are adorable.  Maybe it could at least give you ideas.  I know I was looking for a lot of direction from my photog since I am not a professional model and all and dont know what looks good but we didnt really get much from her other than act natural...which is really hard when there is a camera in your face and you have no idea what to do

  • Mine were taken by a friend of mine who's a photographer. I love them, but mine are not the artsy photos you tend to see in pro pics. I'm not sure we would've done them, but she offered. What I liked best about them was finding a location that meant something to us. We had them done down by the Brooklyn Bridge so it will be nice to look back and say, "Aw, that's when we lived in New York."
