another I hate science rant.

I'm not going to go into the technicals... but I spent every night here this week until 8 working on something very tedious and time consuming. I just got the results... well, lack of results.

Soooo... i don't know what to do now. It took me so long just to get through the protocol for this, it's going to take me months to troubleshoot!!!! BAHHHHH I need a new career path... any suggestions?

Re: another I hate science rant.

  • Trapeze artist?
    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • Ooooohhhh a trapeze artist!!!!  Yes  Sorry you're having such a hard time Dana.  I seriously think you could go somewhere with this furniture thing....building and refinishing...then resale...you never know.
  • Stop encouraging her!  Dana, your furniture is beautiful, but think about everything you've devoted to science.  If you really want a change, though...is there anything you ever thought you wanted to do but was discouraged to pursue it?  (Maybe you thought the pay would be too little or nothing, or maybe you didn't think you could actually do it)

I was just saying...but of course you need to CONTINUE with your science!  Even if you want to do something else, stick to something in the same category and what you can still use your degree towards. Then you can come back to what you are doing now and enjoy it.  Sounds like you are burnt out and just need a change for a bit.  It happens...

  • Bah. I don't know... With my very specific undergraduate degree, I've kind of alienated my self from a lot of real world jobs... it's too specialized. So pretty much anything else I would want to do I would have to go back to school for... which is why I'm still here. Especially since I'm already in the thick of things, and we get a stipend as opposed to paying tuition... and having the "job" security is nice... I can't get fired :)

There are more days like this than not like this... if I was a little further along and the end was in sight, I think I would feel differently... where I am now though, I just feel so hopeless :(

  • I hate that you feel hopeless...  I just want to hug you and give you a margarita and take you antique shopping.  What is your undergrad in?

That may not be as limiting as you think.  While almost everyone I know who has a degree in that area or something similar works in a lab in a university or hospital, not everyone does.  There are a lot of people at the university where I work with various biology degrees who work in accounting or other money related fields.  Also, there was a boom in the 90s where nuclear physicists started working in other fields (actuary science, healthcare administration), why can't you?

  • I have two cousins who majored in this...one is still in school.  And the other is doing pharmaceutical sales and making good money.  What about teaching?

  • I thought about teaching since it's the only thing that I can go into without having to go back to school... but it's not a good time to find a teaching job because of the economy (see my post to foto yesterday).

Pharmaceutical sales is an option... i just don't really know if I am a sales type personality.. KWIM?

  • I know what you mean.  But you never know, you may surprise yourself.  I know a lot of people from my school who went into that (Psychology degree) and I would never see some of them as a sales person...  When I worked in a clinic we had a drug rep come in and she always gave us free stuff.  She was REALLY nice and didn't really seem like a "sales person"...I think it just depends on what drug you get and how "aggressive" you have to be.  She was usually in and out in 20 minutes and happy as could be AND had cute shoes. Big Smile

I'm jumping in here :). I worked for a dr. in HS filing and confirming patients and stuff. I LOVED the pharmaceutical reps! They brought us lunch and coffee and chocolate...seriously, what is not to love?

You aren't so much selling, as trying to get the Dr. to prescribe your meds, so you just have to make the Dr. love you which translates into loving your brand. It can be a lot of travel, depending on the company you work for and the area you are assigned (our people worked most of northern New England), but you build relationships with the dr.s and I know there were a few reps that I really loved seeing.

And, like Cipolla said, the ladies always had great shoes!! I really thought about doing pharm. sales for awhile after my experience at the Dr's office, but then ended up majoring in English and that is where my life went of course...for the first time :).

  • Yeah. I think they changed the rules for a lot of that stuff though. I don't think sales reps are allowed to bring free stuff anymore... according to my mom who works in a pediatricians office... well, and I used to work on the same floor with a bunch of clinicians... so the drug reps would still come, they just wouldn't be able to give out pens and free food.

But I'm all about cute shoes! And I think because it's so much driving, they give you a car to drive as part of your contract... which is always nice :) Maybe I'll look into it.
