Retractable screen doors

Do any of you have one?  I'm thinking about getting some for a few of our doors where we can't otherwise put screens and I was wanting some opinions on them.  My best friend's dad has one, which is where I first saw them, but I haven't asked him any questions yet.

Re: Retractable screen doors

  • we  have talked about putting them in, I'd love to hear some feedback - it's on the list - of course I want to re-side the house, finish the basement, renovate the kitchen & bath, and about a billion other things.
  • I don't know what that is, so I'm assuming we don't have any :o)

My only concern for you would potentially having the dogs break out of them, especially if the door is outside the electric fence (not sure if they only shock them going through the fence and not once they are outside of it)

    Ditto Melanie.

they're basically a frame w/ a retractable screen that rolls to one side of the opening, so you don't have a door that swings out / hinges / closers etc. I've wanted to put them on the house since we bought it, but I just haven't done it, it may be a project my hubs can do while he's home - I may have him painting next week.

  • It reminds me of our patio screen door (which slides to the side).  For the front door, I'd have 2 concerns:

    1) It being full screen: If someone outside really caught Xena's attention and got her riled up, she could, as Melanie had speculated, go right through it with little effort.  (Xena's pretty good about barking at the door, but it'd still be something to consider.  Although, Mandy, your dogs are outside so it probably doesn't matter.  The cats, though?  If they sliced it open...??)

    2) In our climate, all the screen doors on actual doors (front or back) have storm windows you can close.  This protects the actual door (so like my front door) from the majority of the elements.  It's just a simple, crappy piece of glass, but it's at least one more layer for protection and to cut down any heat loss.  (I'm thinking of the nasty strong wind gusts we get in winter or during summer storms; the crappy glass takes the brunt of the wind at least.)

ETA: Don't think I'm ragging on the idea... because I actually like the idea quite a bit.  I also like it aesthetically.

  • Ok, that's what I was picturing in my head.

Anywho, our front door is solid glass or we can swap it out with a screen, which I wish we could do.  Our reason is two fold. FIrst and foremost, the dog was our number one concern.  We don't think she would get out but you never know what would grab her attention.  Two, David could potenitally push through it.  So, for now, the front door is just the glass portion.

  • Our dogs are outside so it won't matter either way for them.  We have other screen doors that they don't bother so I doubt they would bother these.  Same with the cats.  They don't have front claws so as hard as they try to mess with the other screens, they can't.

Let me see if I can explain my door issues.  We have three doors on the back of our house.  Of those two are single doors with no way to put a door that opens and closes normally on.  We've tried.  You also can't do a sliding screen because of where the doors are on the house (there's a section that sticks out....I'll try to find a pic).  The other door is in the center of two door size windows but the way the doors are set, once again, you can't put a sliding screen on it.  Maybe I'll buy one this weekend to try.

You can see all three doors in this pic (pay  no attention to the crap under the house - this was taken when we looked at it the first time so that's the previous owners stuff):
