how do you keep your basements warm?

We have a two story house with a completely finished basement.  It gets pretty chilly in the winter.  We were looking to get a radiator or something along those lines. Our basement is a "T" shape, not horribly big either.   What do you have?

Re: how do you keep your basements warm?

  • We make sure the air registers upstairs are closed in the winter, and open in the basement.... that definitely keeps the basement warmer. We pretty much only use the storage for basement at the moment so we don't have a space heater.
  • This was a new problem for us this year... we had a big 'ol furnace that kept the basement warm.  So much so that when we renovated the basement we closed off the heating vents.

Our furnace died this year and we got a fancy high efficiency furnace.  It did not put out nearly as much heat locally (i.e. its high efficient and doing it job well).  DH put the old heating vent in the basement back in use.  That seemed to help.

  • We have a raised floor in our basement and  DH makes sure all the vents are open plus we do not have a door that leads to our basement, we pretty much live down there, and it seems to be good in the winter.

  • Dehumidifiers work wonders. Sometimes the chill is due to moisture. Baseboard heaters work, but they scare the sh!t out of me as a fire hazard...not sure with the kidlets that would be the best option for you. Try closing off some of the registers on the first floor and open up the ones in the basement. If you keep the basement a tad warmer, the areas on the main floor should be warmer to start with cause of the radiant heat from the space below. Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle! lol
  • Our family room is in the basement so we got one of those electric fireplaces to cut the chill down there.  It works wonders and really didn't add that much to our electricity bill.
  • we have a gas fireplace and a dehumidifier. Our house is a split level, so we spend a lot of time in our basement, as it's our casual family room
