Good summer camp for 8 year old?

My sister-in-law called me yesterday and she and my brother want to pay to send my DSS to summer camp this summer.  We thought a 1 week camp would be best since he's never been.  The budget is $1k.  The only summer camp I ever went to was this really crappy camp affiliated with the church where we stayed in a crappy dorm building next to a small chapel and a dirty pool

Any suggestions in that price range that isn't too insanely far to drive him to in order to drop him off?

  • Hmm, when I was a kid I always liked Camp Flaming Arrow:

Bear in mind, though, that's it's been quite some time since I was 10 and I haven't been there since. Still, it's something to look in to. :-)

  • Check out Austin Family and they have a list of area camps that would be great for and 8 year old

Are you looking for sleep-away camp or day camp? Religious or secular?  Any special interests like sports, computer, arts/performing arts, general?

I was a camp kid from age 8 - 17 (mostly through scouting). I loved camp!
