Death threat

For those who wanted to know more about it...

Yesterday my students had a project due.  One of my students was trying to work on it during class since he didn't finish it yet and I told him that he needed to put it away and do it on his own time since we had other work to do.  I said that he had time on Monday to do it in class and he chose to talk to his friend instead.  Well, he went off on me.  He started yelling and arguing with me.  I told my TA to take him out of the room and bring him to the office explaining what happened.

I didn't think too much of it because this isn't the first time this child has gone off in my classroom.  I went about the rest of my day and at the end of it the VP pulled me aside to tell me what happened later.  I guess this student was in math class and the TA in the room was looking for his homework in his folder and came across a paper that stated that he wanted to bring a gun to school and shoot me in the back of the head.  The TA did the right thing by bringing it to administrations attention.  This is the part that ticks me off.  They only suspended him for one day!

Now he's home bragging how his vacation started early and the weather is so nice and rubbing it in the other kids faces.  My students are upset because of what he said and how little punishment he got for it.  Some of them think he should have been expelled (this isn't the first incident where he's misbehaved) and while I think that may be a little harsh, I do believe the police should have been notified.  I'm sure they would have if he threatened another student instead of a teacher (myself).  I tried talking to administration but they wouldn't listen to me or the other teachers on my team.  I feel that if I go over their heads and contact the police that my job will become even more of a nightmare since they could put me in a different position (more preps, travelling, etc.)  or even worse with all the layoffs our district has to make.

I honestly don't think the kid would ever do anything like that, I'm pretty sure he was just venting his frustrations, but I still feel that we need to be cautious and inform the police of the situation.

Hence the reason I'm SO incredibly glad to be on vacation right now!

Re: Death threat

  • Dear Lord!  I'm so glad that you are heading out of town for some fun.  I'm so sorry that this happened to you!  It is terrible that the administration isn't doing much about it.  I was reading about other situations just yesterday where the school leaders would rather sweep stuff under the rug then have their school have a bad reputation.  It's just awful.  My sister actually had one of her students (whose family is in the KKK) threaten to burn a cross on her lawn last year.

I hope you have a FANTASTIC trip - you deserve it!

  • omg...how scary...and wrong

  • I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I can't believe he was only suspended for one day. Do they have a plan for when he comes back and is back in your class? What area of NY are you in, it is slipping my mind right now. Administration can be frustrating when it seems like things are allowed to happen just to keep the waters calm. Enjoy your vacation... You deserve it!

  • Have you talked to your union rep?  That would be my VERY FIRST stop if I thought administration was not taking appropriate disciplinary action against a student.

I agree, no one should take threats lightly anymore. I'm almost appalled that more isn't done for you. This is your SAFETY we're talking about! AND, if the kid had the means of bringing a weapon to school, who's to say he would limit his actions to just one person?

I'm starting to get really p-o-ed for you right now!!

  • Thanks ladies.  I did talk to my union rep.  She has already butt heads with administration about many topics they have shoved under the rug.  This is just another battle that will be fought to no avail.

This is the Albany area BTW.

The only thing they have in place is a parent conference the day we start back after the break.  Hopefully they get this child some treatment because he certainly needs it!

  • My BIL had something similar happen to him when he was a teacher, except it was a hatchet instead of a gun.  He was teaching 8th grade social studies.  I don't know the whole ordeal, but the district didn't take the threat seriously and he ended up resigning in mid May.  Didn't even finish the year.  He now lives 6 hours away from that district and works for boarder patrol, would never go back to teaching.
  • Holy snap! That is crazy. Thank goodness for some vacation for you!
  • That is really scary.  I hope that the kid was just letting off steam and will be over it before he comes back.  I hope you have a great vacation, sounds like you deserve it!

I agree with this...and if you did contact the police its for your OWN safety...and if the district has an issue with that- maybe you should go to a different district..

I know and I agree.  Problem is if I lose my job here then there's very little chance I'd find something somewhere else with all the budget cuts in school districts.  No one is hiring and I cannot afford to lose my job.

  • Holy crap!  I am just catching up on posts because I haven't been on in forever, and I am really sorry you are going through this!  That's scary.  I hope that you are ok and that vacation helps a little.  Be careful when you go back!
