Birth Control Pills/Acne/Migraines!

I'm currently on Yaz and I've noticed an influx of acne. I think it is a combination of stress and the pill. My problem is I have been on Orthotricyclin before and it caused me major migraines.

I'm wondering if I can get some recommendations from you ladies on what you use and like. I know each pill works on everyone differently, but I'm wondering what fellow nesties use (those who take the pill).

Thanks!

Re: Birth Control Pills/Acne/Migraines!

  • I get severe migraines, but much much less than before.  They were so bad they were almost like a stroke (impaired vision, speech, walking, you name it).  I ended up at a neurologist and he said "What in the world are you doing on the pill!!!!"  He told me to stop with any type of hormonal birth control.

  • My migraines are caused by hormonal shifts, so when I ovulate, get my period etc.  I was on the pill for about 12 years to treat my headaches.  Now that I'm off the pill I get headaches and break-out, but not while on it.
  • This is a fairly complex issue, so I would suggest talking to someone who is aware of your medical history, your doctor.  I know it's been said before, but different pills work for different people.  Orthotricyclen and Yaz are, as you know, not the only types of birth control that exist.  Perhaps some other pill would work, or something non-hormonal (IUD, FAM), would be better for you.
  • I tried 3 or 4 different types of BC, because of migraines,  until I started on the NuvaRing.  Everyone has a different experience, but for me, there was no weight gain, no change in desire, no mood swings, but most importantly, no migraines.
  • Yaz completely cleared up my acne (except on the days right before my period).  I agree your dr can help you find something better for you, but if you're looking for a solution in the meantime, I highly recommend Clean & Clear Spot Treatment, it works wonders!

  • I suggest you make an appointment with your doctor. There are too many variables for us to be able to say which pill is right for you. I also have an acne problem and Clinique Acne Solutions has helped a little bit, but I'm seeing my physician tomorrow to see if a prescription will be more helpful.

Since you asked, I am on Ogestrel. It is a fairly high dose pill and would probably be the absolute worst pill for someone to be on who experiences BCP side effects. Luckily, it gives me no side effects. I am on it continuously and I love it.

  • I agree that everyone is different. I mentioned on a Yahoo group about migraines that Desogen was sheer hell for my migraines during the 7 day placebo week. Another migraineur said that it was fine for her for 12 years.

I'm on Mircette, which seems to be working well for me. My gyno is having me skip periods because I get menstrual migraines. Even when I wasn't skipping periods, there are fewer placebo days than other pills, so it was easier for me to take because the hormones didn't fluctuate as much.

When I am not on pills, I am a pizza face. I seem to get migraines with or without the pill, but some pills are worse than others.

  • I've had horrible migraines since I was 6 years old. My biggest problem on Yaz was that it made me so tired. I'm talking going to bed at 8pm and sleeping until 10am. I was so drained all the time. I've since switched to Sprintec which is a generic BCP. I noticed a huge difference the first week. I could stay up late and get up early. It was a really good switch for me. And it hasn't seemed to affect my migraines at all. It certainly hasn't increased them. I don't have much of a problem with acne, just a pimple every now and then, so I can't say for sure if it would help with that or not.
  • I loved the Nuva Ring.  I had the fewest amount of side effects on this.  Plus you put it in , 3 weeks later remove and in 7 days put a new one in.  Plus just like with any other form, you can replace immediately with a new one and skip AF,  I have IBS and never had an issue with it "falling out."  My DH never felt it and neither did I.

    Good Luck!
